Fair enough, I think Akasha is likely going to win out long term against Steem once it is out. IPFS is the way to solve the deplatforming/demonetizing issues online, while Steem only allows text to be immutable. I like LBRY, but its not user friendly really.

Stake-based just doesn't work for anything widespread. It works for only highly niche topics in my opinion. Afterall, downvotes create a scenario wherein opposing ideologies can swarm your blog to demonetize you. That definitely can't work for a internet wide curation system that would exist on opinionated political sites, news sites and all those tense topics.

For example, recently, I've been doing the carnivore diet, which tends to enrage vegans. Guys like Dr. Shawn Baker that are advocating for the carnivore diet get swarmed by angry vegans. If Steem became a big deal the vegans could censor and demonetize any opinions that dissent from their own. So, Steem, in its current design, if mass adopted, would create a dystopian internet environment.
