There were thick clouds gathering on the horizon as a new day was breaking. Eventually the clouds grew thick enough to blot out the sun.

The last type of sandstorm in Nebraska was during the dust bowl years in the 1930's. The farmers had plowed the fields for planting when a severe drought hit the area. The wind stirred up dust off the sun baked ground and created what we refer to as the dust bowl.

In recent years the sunrise has been tainted by fires as far away as one thousand miles away in Canada. This usually creates red sunrises and sunsets.
