The Concha Ferrant Art Gallery and the Municipal Directorate of Culture of Guanabacoa (Cuba) inaugurated the Lo Africano visual arts exhibition yesterday, as part of the kickoff of the Wemilere celebrations in Guanabacoa. Wemilere is a term that refers to the festival of African ancestral roots. The exhibition showcased African cultural heritage—specifically the contribution of the Congo and Carabalí cultures—within Cuban culture.

The gallery was packed with diplomatic personnel from the embassies of Gabon, Tanzania, Guinea, Uganda, and the Congo, along with invited and award-winning artists, the official in charge of religious affairs for the Communist Party of Cuba, authorities and prominent figures from Guanabacoa, as well as organizers and regular friends of the gallery. This year, Wemilere is dedicated to the sister republics of Uganda and Gabon, and to the 507th anniversary of the founding of the Town of San Cristóbal de La Habana.

The Ambassador of Gabon, a true art lover, was keen to learn the message behind each painting and photograph on display, although he found abstract art a bit more difficult to understand. The gallery director accompanied him on his tour while a translator helped them understand one another. He was very interested in terms like cimarrón, religions of African origin in Cuba, and Afro-Cuban culture in general, comparing our reality with that of Guyana, where he apparently lived for a time. It seemed to me he couldn't quite grasp that both Cubans and our culture are a mixture.

This is a piece that everyone loved, made with Chinese ink; it costs 500 dollars 😮, and a painter told me it was a steal. They even left a dedication for the artist.

The Ambassador of Gabon was very happy with the event and, at the welcome cocktail (funded by the Embassy of Uganda), warmly thanked the municipality of Guanabacoa and the festival's organizing team for their hospitality, as well as for choosing Gabon as the guest country of honor for this edition. He also made a special mention of Cuba as a brother nation.

For his delegation, choosing Gabon for this ninth edition symbolizes deep pride and a moment of fraternity that celebrates the ties and shared memories uniting African and Cuban peoples despite the oceanic distance.

He also expressed that culture remains the most beautiful language for understanding and drawing closer to one another, fostering solidarity, fraternity, and joint celebration.

For my part, I got to meet some very interesting people, such as the culture attorney for the municipality of Guanabacoa, who told me that activities like this fill her soul. I also got to chat with diplomats from the Embassy of Guinea, who understand Spanish but don't speak any English at all, and are very reserved and kind people. I exchanged a few words with the Ambassador of Gabon, a very intelligent man who had doubts about whether Cuban women were independent or blindly obeyed our parents as in other cultures 😆.

And, of course, I shared some time with my friends from the gallery, even though not everyone made it into the photo 😁.
