Have you ever had a walnut tree in your own home? No? Me neither, till today. Now I have one, inside the house. I've never planned to have one as don't need one, but life is funny sometimes as you never know what comes your way and when.
Today I went to the cemetery to clean the grave from the weeds that are always showing up, no matter what you do and among the weeds, I found this walnut seedling.
Now you may ask how on earth this seedling got there? The answer is very simple. Birds are hiding nuts and all kinds of seeds in general, wherever they can, with the intent of coming back later to get it. I suppose they can't collect all the nuts they hide during autumn and this is how nature takes its course and these nuts are starting to grow when spring arrives.
At first I did not recognize it as the leaves are too small to look like a walnut seedlings, but when I pulled it out saw the walnut and knew right away. What is interesting is that the nut is still attached to the seedling and I suppose it's going to remain as it doesn't look like it's ready to let go.
When I saw how big it is and how healthy, I could not throw it away, honestly. I knew I don't want ti as there's no space for a tree like this size on my balcony and can't plant it on a public space as there are no guarantees the lawn mowers won't cut it down, so I called my dad to see if his neighbor needs one and he said yes.
So I put it in my bag, took it home and gave it the care it needed.
When I saw how tall it is, I knew a regular pot would not do it as pots are wide but not tall enough, so I chose this plastic bottle.
So I filled the bottle with soil up to the level to cover what has been underground till now. This is very important as the root can get damaged if exposed to the sun.
Now it's sitting on the balcony as it needs to still sit under the sunlight and once we take it to the neighbor, he's going to cut the bottle and place it in the ground.
It's great to know one day someone is going to eat the fruit of this tree and I have contributed to it. I was told several times that I have a green thumb and now looking back, realizing ow many plants I've saved, it feels good. We have to protect nature as nature is life, it's the future. Who knows, this tree most likely is going to contribute to purifying the air as well.
I mentioned it above, that it's not the first time I find such a seedling. There was one a couple of years ago, which I planted to the green space in the cemetery, next the the fence, but I suppose it got cut with the grass. That is why I wanted to save this one.
