¡Hola amigos cinéfilos! Hoy les traigo mi reseña de una película del género thriller, muy atrapante, llamada Verity: la sombra de un engaño.
Hello, movie lovers! Today I'm bringing you my review of a very gripping thriller called Verity.
Trama - Plot
En esta historia seguimos a Lowen, una escritora poco conocida que es contratada para escribir la continuación de una saga best seller de la aclamada escritora Verity. La razón por la que ella no puede hacerlo es porque tuvo un accidente automovilístico y quedó en estado vegetativo, pero su condición se mantiene en secreto. Para realizar está difícil tarea deberá mudarse a la casa de Verity, que vive en las afueras de la ciudad junto con su esposo Jeremy y su pequeño hijo. En su despacho escondió pequeñas notas por todas partes con ideas para seguir sus libros, pero no solo escondió esas notas, sino que dejó un pendrive con un manuscrito inédito donde cuenta su vida y hace confesiones muy perturbadoras. Ahora Lowen se debate entre cuál es la verdad y cuál es la mentira, lo único real es que Verity es una maestra del engaño.
In this story, we follow Lowen, a little-known writer who is hired to write the sequel to a best-selling series by the acclaimed author Verity. The reason Verity can’t do it herself is that she was in a car accident and is now in a vegetative state, though her condition is being kept secret. To carry out this difficult task, she must move into Verity’s house, which is located on the outskirts of town, where Verity lives with her husband Jeremy and their young son. In her office, Verity hid small notes everywhere with ideas for continuing her books, but she didn’t just hide those notes—she also left a USB drive containing an unpublished manuscript in which she recounts her life and makes some very disturbing confessions. Now Lowen is torn between what is true and what is false; the only thing that is real is that Verity is a master of deception.
Reseña - Review
Una película que estaba esperando con ansias. Acá nos encontramos con un thriller muy atrapante, aunque empieza de manera un tanto accidentada con algunas que otras escenas un poco flojas donde no pasa mucho, pero para mí sirven para construir la atmósfera que vendrá luego. Sin dudas, donde más explota es en las escenas finales, pero hay muchas otras donde se puede percibir la tensión y el clima de suspenso.
A movie I’ve been eagerly awaiting. This is a very gripping thriller, although it gets off to a somewhat rocky start with a few scenes that are a bit slow and where not much happens—but to me, they serve to set the stage for what’s to come. Without a doubt, it really shines in the final scenes, but there are many others where you can feel the tension and the atmosphere of suspense.
Lo que más me gustó de la película es la actuación impecable de Anne Hathaway, realmente fue su año en cuanto a producciones cinematográficas. Ella fue la Verity que me imaginé que sería, porque sí, la película está basada en un libro del mismo nombre que, por supuesto, leí en su momento. Así que ya sabía lo que esperar, no tuve el factor sorpresa de mi lado. Sin embargo, me sorprendió que resultará una adaptación bastante fiel a lo que recuerdo.
What I liked most about the movie was Anne Hathaway’s flawless performance—it really was her year in terms of film productions. She was exactly the Verity I imagined her to be, because yes, the movie is based on a book of the same name that, of course, I read back then. So I already knew what to expect; I didn’t have the element of surprise on my side. However, I was surprised that it turned out to be a fairly faithful adaptation of what I remember.
Verity es un personaje super interesante porque nos va tejiendo en sus redes y al final esto también termina por perjudicarla, pero lo mejor es que nunca sabes cuál es la verdad de todo, eso lo deja a la libre interpretación de lo que quieras creer que sucedió, es la maestra del engaño. pero si algo nos enseña la película es que todos sus personajes de una forma u otra necesitan ir a terapia con urgencia porque no es normal su manera de actuar y reaccionar ante las situaciones que les toca atravesar.
Verity is a really interesting character because she gradually draws us into her web, and in the end, this also ends up hurting her—but the best part is that you never know what the truth really is; she leaves it open to your own interpretation of what you want to believe happened. She’s a master of deception. But if the movie teaches us anything, it’s that all of its characters, in one way or another, urgently need to go to therapy because the way they act and react to the situations they face isn’t normal.
Tampoco es creíble el desenlace final, en la cabeza de la autora parecía funcionar, pero si uno se pone a analizar todo a fondo nos damos cuenta que hay varios cabos sueltos que no tienen sentido y le quitan credibilidad a la trama. Pero el efecto impacto es acertado y la película termina por llevarte a no empatizar con Verity, sino todo lo contrario. Ella es la antagonista y hace el papel de villana, por si todavía no había quedado claro.
The final outcome isn't credible either; it seemed to work in the author's mind, but if you analyze everything thoroughly, you realize there are several loose ends that don't make sense and undermine the plot's credibility. But the impact is effective, and the movie ultimately leads you not to empathize with Verity—quite the opposite, in fact. She is the antagonist and plays the role of the villain, in case that wasn’t already clear.
Ahora bien, tampoco me pareció que Jeremy fuera tan santo ni inocente, ni Lowen tan buena como parece porque tiene una mente fría para pensar en los momentos críticos. Siento que son personajes que están perturbados por sus historias pasadas y que ni ellos mismos saben lo que hacen, ni cómo actúan, ni en qué creen. También pienso que la manera de darse el romance entre Lowen y Jeremy fue algo apresurado y sin mucho sentido. Tampoco fue tan creíble.
That said, I didn't think Jeremy was all that saintly or innocent, nor did I think Lowen was as good as she seems, because she has a cool head when it comes to critical moments. I feel like they're characters who are haunted by their pasts and who don't even know what they're doing, how they're acting, or what they believe in. I also think the way the romance between Lowen and Jeremy unfolded was a bit rushed and didn’t make much sense. It wasn’t very believable either.
Pero todo esto no quita que sea un thriller impactante y atrapante. Yo la fui a ver al cine con una amiga que no conocía la historia y quedó sorprendida, aunque no le gustó cómo estaba planteado el final. Pero es así tal cual sucede en el libro, queda a la libre interpretación de cada uno de los espectadores lo que toman como verdadero.
But none of this takes away from the fact that it’s a gripping and compelling thriller. I went to see it at the movies with a friend who didn’t know the story, and she was surprised—though she didn’t like the way the ending was handled. But that’s exactly how it happens in the book; it’s up to each viewer to decide for themselves what they take as true.
