It was so simple and clear cut back then, good jobs were abundant for college grads. Columbus Public Schools, surprisingly, offered a college prep track in the mid-80's. I got my college level basic geometry and algebra out of the way in 8th grade and then most of all the other basic college requirements finished in high school.
