Basing the tax on weight would make sense. Like so much in a government bureaucracy, basing the tax on number of cylinders seems outdated. Weight is the excuse our State penalizes EV owners with that extra tax but there are plenty of ICE vehicles that weigh much more than my Tesla Model 3 and they aren't penalized with that extra tax. I think government just charges whatever they want because they can.

Our roads are a mess too, despite the windfall of taxes they collect from us. Much of the revenue collected for road maintenance is diverted to other programs and disappears into the void. Shortly after I got my Tesla I hit a pothole that was so deep my car bottomed out. It swallowed one of my front wheels and my front bumper slammed against the road surface. I was sure my car was damaged but, miraculously, it wasn't.
