Morale has been at an all time low here on Hive lately and I realize when token prices and engagement are low it’s sometimes tough to muster enthusiasm. But recently I had a wake up call that had a way of changing my frequency a little. I dove into my stats on Quora, I realize Quora pretty much sucks now but it didn’t used to be so horrible.
I’ve been sharing my writing on there longer than Hive (or the platform that came before it) has been in existence. A little over two years ago I answered a question about watches on Quora and that article has received more reads than any of my pieces ever have—1.8 million reads to be exact. Admittedly, this was a total fluke—a right place, right time, right topic kind of moment for me. I posted my answer during the peak of the Rolex-craze as people were flush with cash because of the pandemic-era stimulus checks. So it’s safe to say this probably isn’t repeatable.
I am monetized on Quora but have yet to receive a penny from any of the payouts in fifteen years. I think it’s because they have a minimum payout threshold of ten dollars before they’ll transfer your earnings to a bank. This is exactly what Quora has deemed almost 2 million reads to be worth—a whopping $4.85. That’s $0.0022694 per set of eyeballs. I would love to know what Quora has made from ad revenue on that post of mine. I bet it's more than $5.
This is shocking really. For me this was a great reminder of how valuable Hive is. Most of us make a whole lot more than that here when you begin to compare apples to apples. To make it sweeter there are no minimum earning requirements before you get paid. And we’re paid in crypto. And Hive is decentralized. And we’re a cohesive community of friends who actually know each other.
Sometimes you just need a real-world example to make you realize how good you actually have it. As long as people still believe in Hive this place will continue to operate. We’ll continue to preserve all the friendships we’ve made and, even during slumps, we'll still be earning more than all but the top 1% of content creators do on most other platforms.
I'm counting my blessings today now that my attitude has been readjusted. If this place is better than most other platforms even during a slump just imagine the potential of what Hive could become during boom times.
