I haven't been traumatized. I've been solidified.
I don't think one excludes the other per se.
I notice that I am a little stricter in my attitude towards certain principles of life that I used to hold less firmly. Whether that is good or not so good for me remains to be seen. My attitude towards the issues of life has changed many times in the course of my life and it seems to me that where I once was and what I stood for, that stand has now been abandoned by me in favour of the opposite. I think we humans seek balance.
If we advocate a cause and it has little upside, we continue to strengthen it. But if it gets a boost and the pendulum swings extremely in that direction, we change the position straight to the opposite.
I make a distinction in what you said we were denied between my personal relationships and the public atmosphere and the world of work. In my work I was the only one who opposed the measures and so I had to leave. It was the same, or close to it, at my son's school. The parent body was united on the side of the conformists. I had a number of email battles with teachers and parents.
I assume that these are now judged differently than they were at the time. Perhaps it gave some people food for thought, even if they never let me know or will let me know.
In my private life, apart from disagreements, I have not had any exclusions. Some friendships stood ground and never changed. Others vanished.
