To interfere with a philosophical approach, I would like to ask:
If man does not feel he belongs to earth, as his ears belong to his head, why would he think that he can belong to Mars?
Is not Escapism the very reason for wanting to go to another planet? If fear of death, as the ground for escapism, is the root for building space ships, I am convinced that it's going to fail.
We are already part of the Universe and human biology and mans psyche is as much adapted to earthly conditions as all the human organs perfectly make up the human body. As Allan Watts says it in "The Book" (On the taboo against knowing who you are), "we are already IT". With the faith that we are IT, death, even the extinction of the human race, is nothing to fight or fear.
With the mindset of escaping death, would life on Mars be any different than life on Earth? If that's the main reason to fly to the stars, I would think you might as well stay here. Since rejection of mortality evokes the very thing one believes one must flee from, fear itself. Without the foreboding of facing the greatest adventure of human existence, one's own death, one denigrates it in such a way that it becomes miserable to live when there is no salvation in sight. What if you don't want to be saved at all because you already are save?
