I think it's wrong to define it as "genre", but right to define it as a platform or media through which information that is educational is acquired. If the purpose of playing video games is to learn, then it's not as good a way of consuming information compared to doing it by the book (see what I did there lol dad joke?). Yes, the amount of things you can do in a video game is amazing, but it tells us nothing of the quality, the depth, the reflection of thought, the dialogue with the authors, in this case creators, which is something one is more predisposed to by a book. Call me old-fashioned and elitist, but a book is finer if the purpose is to learn.
