I do not like to write about a single player, because that would be giving credit to a single person, in a sport where several elements are involved to achieve success, but sometimes it is good to highlight how good was a player and his way into the big leagues until the end of his career, of course if his way was good! And that is why I will talk about a player that although he was not so famous in MLB, he was one of the best, in an era where there were a number of players who excelled a lot and that he, despite everything, did a good job for the team which he represented throughout his career, And that in this 2023 his journey as a piece of the Cincinnati Reds has come to an end after 16 seasons, his name, Joey Votto, a Canadian who came to take over the first base of the team from the center of the United States and leave a mark as one of the best players of this set.

As any left-handed hitter he is always very friendly in front of the manager, especially Dusty Baker, who finally was the one who took him to be the starting first baseman of the first team in the 2008 season, his first full time, and what would mark the beginning of an extraordinary career, which also marked an era in that set, as a hitter who dominated several offensive categories of the red team and the National League at that time, achieving stability, because many had gone through there, his durability time was very short.

To get a player as efficient and constant as Votto, is sometimes very difficult to locate, we could say that there are few who can do it, and more, that remain in your team for a long time, demonstrating not only their skills on the field, but that commitment that in these times are easily lost, This is due to globalization and the attractiveness of the markets, where other teams offer you many fortunes for simply playing baseball or doing what you like the most, resulting in most cases, something very easy to do, because the player just wants to play ball.

In general and over the years, the American player is the one who monopolizes the main offensive and defensive categories of the league, and it is for two things, one, to represent the majority of the mass of players in terms of quantity, and the other, is for his talent, Votto stood out among them and remained, dominating the main offensive categories of his team as mentioned, but also of the National League, to catapult him to be dominant and as a foreigner, increasing his value with proven numbers, of a most valuable player, obtaining as recognition several calls to the All-Star game and several individual awards.

If we look at his numbers, he represented that, dominance in a position that ended up being the undisputed starter, so much so, that he had 2 seasons where he played all and absolutely all the games of his team, playing all 162 games that contains a regular season, He also had another season of 161 games in the field and two more campaigns of 158 games each, very high percentages to define very well, the constancy and dominance for his position and the game, which led him in 2010, to win the MVP award, over the superstar of that time and now legend, Albert Pujols.

Finding a player in this era that only plays for one team for a long time is very difficult, that's why Joey can say that he is one of the old guard, defending the Cincinnati Reds jersey for 16 seasons, which is no small thing, He reflected his love not only for the game, but for a city and an organization that fit him like a glove, because it was there where he showed the best he has, a worthy example for today's players, who are constantly looking for new teams in search of economic stability or a championship.

I remember very well last season, the season of 2022, when this player for a week, that is, 5 or 6 games, was hitting home runs, incredible, wasn't it? being a very important streak hitting the ball out of the park, not so much because of the consecutiveness of the fact, but if we take into account his age, which last year was 39 years old, but it was something admirable, it is like good wine, the older it tastes better, and if it is with love for the team, it tastes even better.

The retirement of a franchise player such as Joey Votto, marks the end of an era, is the completion of a cycle, which I think will be difficult to overcome, because the quality of this player is something that was very remarkable, and in these last days of regular season in 2023, we will be giving way to the new, and it is when the baton is given to players like Spencer Steer, a player who is shaping up to be the replacement for Votto's position (first base) and others like Elly De la Cruz who are called to carry the offense of this historic team like the Cincinnati Reds.

Whether the Reds are in good hands or not, we will not know until those I just mentioned begin to write their own history, the talent they have, baseball speaking and in theory according to their numbers or references, you could say yes, but to become like Votto will be a very difficult question to answer, if we see all the factors that have just been exposed here in this publication, such as: loyalty, love, and simply playing baseball, or doing what you love the most, which led the pride of Toronto Canada, to be one of a kind and to win the heart of an entire city for always staying with them, it could be said that they will finally be in good hands with these new talents, the constant struggles in the first place of their division in this 2023, evidence, that all will not be lost without Votto in the future.
