after a long hard winter spring is a time for new beginnings and romance which makes it a popular choice for time of year for weddings. even though the evening temperature is objectively still on the cool side, it feels warm compared to what these folks have been exposed to in the near past. and minutes before they were standing in the sun which now only shines on the rocky island in the background. i was lucky to be in the right place at the right time for this shot as just a couple of minutes later this party left the dock.

the women's dresses have obviously been coordinated both in style and color. so much so that at first glance it may seem that the dresses are what this shot is really about and color is a major element.

but still, i wondered how it would be in black and white

well, the dresses are still very prominent but the wooden boards of the dock in the foreground and sunlit rock in the background have taken more attention. and there seems to be something more significant about the woman standing alone on the right facing away from the group. the rocky islands are actually about 1 km away but when the setting sun lights them up they seem much closer. the box in the middle is electricity supply for boats at dock. in the color shot it is easy to overlook with all the festivity but here in this shot it is suddenly right in the middle and it affects the mood

i took this shot at the canal in the park that used to be a naval base back in the days of wooden sailing ships just half an hour before the previous wedding party shot. the new leaves on the trees have that light green shade typical of early spring as they are still developing chlorophyll. the mustard yellow on the wharfs where they used to build the ships is a shade that is historically unique to this area. the shed on the right is the red used for barns, outhouses and sheds etc differentiating them from white residences and the yellow military buildings. an notice the sun is not lighting up the island making it seem more distant

without the color, the place seems much more historic. there is very little in this photo that would not have been there 100 years ago yet in the color version the element of springtime seems more prominent than the historical or timeless element. here the stone walls and barracks with the limecrete stands out. and maybe the canal seems slightly wider.
