It's okay nothing about crypto is really straightforward yet, so our best bet is to help each other figure it out. Some of us are just basic level users, we can't all be devs, right?

Alright, I'll do my best here. Peakd is just one way to access the HIVE chain. Another way is via hive.blog. Both Peakd and hive.blog allow us to interact on the HIVE chain. Whenever HIVE chain went live (almost) all steemians received airdropped HIVE tokens. A snapshot of all STEEM chain accounts (from Steemit, steempeak busy, appics, partiko, etc., etc.) was taken prior to HIVE going live. The snapshot included the account balances and all posts made on STEEM chain to that point in time. All of the steemians' posts and tokens were automatically "transferred" (that may be an inaccurate term) to HIVE chain. Further, unless you post to both chains through their respective front ends, what you post on steemit, steempeak, busy, etc. (STEEM chain) will not automatically appear on hive.blog, peakd, etc. (HIVE chain).

Many people are posting to both chains right now, and some communities currently remain active on both chains. However, there are also many people are shunning Steemit (and STEEM) and only posting to HIVE because of the bad blood created during the Steemit Inc. change-of-hands. Of course, you are free to post to whichever chain through whatever front end you choose.

For reference, this is what OnChainArt's page on steemit looks like when I log in. On the right there is a box with details about the Community. In the details box there are two rectangular shaped buttons. One says "Subscribe", and one says "New Post". If you have successfully joined the Community, "Subscribe" will change to say "Joined".

Here's what OnChainArt on peakd looks like from my side. I know I've joined the Community because there's an "Unsubscribe" under the "Write a Post" button near the top right.


Hopefully you can get some use from my answer here. This crypto social media thing is sometimes tricky, especially since it's a new frontier and all, but Hakuna Matata.
