Hey, ¿cómo les va, Hivers? Espero que de maravilla. Hasta hace unos días estuve viendo una serie que me hizo romper mi promesa de divorciarme de cualquier obra de Marvel tras Endgame: WandaVision. Esta serie ha estado en todas partes desde su estreno y tanta fue la insistencia de mis amigos que decidí hacer trampa en mi divorcio con Marvel y me puse a verla. Luego de sus 9 episodios de duración, me encontré con pensamientos muy mezclados. Siento que hay mucho qué decir de esta serie, y por eso estoy aquí. Cabe anotar que esta reseña está llena de spoilers, pues es un análisis que contiene mi opinión acerca de toda la trama.

Up until a few days ago I was watching a series that made me break my promise to divorce myself from any Marvel work after Endgame: WandaVision. This series has been everywhere since its premiere and so much was the insistence of my friends that I decided to cheat on my divorce with Marvel and started watching it. After its 9 episode run, I found myself with very mixed thoughts. I feel like there's a lot to say about this series, and that's why I'm here. It should be noted that this review is full of spoilers, as it is a review that contains my opinion about the entire plot.

WandaVision is a television mini-series, belonging to Marvel Studios and created by Jac Schaeffer. It is an exclusive series of the Disney+ streaming service and its story is part of the MCU, a cinematic universe where multiple stories belonging to Marvel comics have intertwined events and take place in the same fictional universe. The series premiered on January 15 of this year and generated a lot of buzz among Marvel fans and also among many other viewers outside the MCU. It revived interest in the franchise after a time of silence due to the pandemic situation.
La historia: Iniciando | The story: Starting
La historia de WandaVision se desarrolla después de los acontecimientos de la película Avengers: Endgame, dándole entrada a la cuarta fase del UCM. Por lo tanto, para entender por completo los acontecimientos de esta serie, debe tenerse un conocimiento previo del UCM y haber visto la mayoría de las películas o al menos, las más importantes. La trama gira en torno a Wanda Maximoff y Vision, dos personajes del UCM que sostienen una relación romántica y viven en un suburbio normal. La historia se presenta a sí misma como si fuese una comedia televisiva de los años 50/60, la estética en blanco y negro, el formato en 4:3, la estética y vestuario general, todo luce acorde a los años 50/60. Wanda y Vision viven su vida idílica como personas con superpoderes intentando encajar en este nuevo suburbio, pero pronto se comenzarán a dar cuenta de que algo anda mal y que hay mucho más que solo una vida rutinaria detrás de esta inocente comedia. The story of WandaVision takes place after the events of the movie Avengers: Endgame, giving entrance to the fourth phase of the MCU. Therefore, to fully understand the events of this series, you must have prior knowledge of the MCU and have seen most of the movies, or at least the major ones. The plot revolves around Wanda Maximoff and Vision, two MCU characters who sustain a romantic relationship and live in a normal suburb. The story presents itself as if it were a 50s/60s TV sitcom, the black and white aesthetics, the 4:3 format, the overall aesthetics and costumes, everything looks 50s/60s. Wanda and Vision live their idyllic life as super-powered people trying to fit into this new suburb, but soon they begin to realize that something is wrong and that there is much more than just a routine life behind this innocent sitcom. Eventually, Vision begins to notice that there are things that don't make much sense in that neighborhood, like there are things that lack a past, the difficulty he has in remembering anything prior to moving to that neighborhood, among many other things and events that make him believe that something is wrong.
Una de las cosas más llamativas de esta serie, es la interesante ejecución que tienen, no solo la cinematografía, si no la estética general, el desenvolvimiento de los personajes, el contexto y el sentido del humor que lleva la trama. WandaVision se presenta a sí misma de una forma muy meta.
One of the most striking things about this series is the interesting execution of not only the cinematography, but also the overall aesthetics, character development, context and sense of humor. WandaVision presents itself in a very meta way.
Es un show de televisión, dentro de un show de televisión, por ende, el espectador está sometido a esta programación falsa que es mostrada en la serie, siendo la programación, las vidas de Wanda y de Vision. Si bien Vision es quien se da cuenta de que algo anda mal, nosotros como espectadores podemos notar señales mucho antes. Incluso al comenzar la serie, con saber suficiente del UCM, ya sabes que debe haber algo mal, pues hay cosas que son demasiado evidentes que, en teoría, no deberían ser posibles. Una de las cosas más obvias, es el hecho de que el personaje de Vision murió durante la guerra mostrada en Infinity War.
It is a television show, within a television show, therefore, the viewer is subjected to this fake programming that is shown in the series, the programming being, the lives of Wanda and Vision. While Vision is the one who realizes that something is wrong, we as viewers can notice signs much earlier. Even at the start of the series, with knowing enough about the MCU, you already know there must be something wrong, as there are things that are too obvious that, in theory, shouldn't be possible. One of the most obvious things, is the fact that the Vision character died during the war shown in Infinity War.
La trama transcurre con todas las características de una comedia de televisión. Wanda y Visión están intentando adaptarse a este nuevo vecindario llamado Westview, intentando parecer lo más normales posibles. Tienen una vida rutinaria e idílica y sus problemas son tan superfluos y tontos como los de cualquier sitcom. Conforme pasa cada episodio, el tiempo comienza a transcurrir vertiginosamente y cada vez hay más señales de que algo no está bien en WestView. Todo se desenvuelve de una forma muy orgánica y original, todo se siente muy bien ejecutado y la cinematografía de estos episodios es increíble. Todo se siente muy acorde a la época que representan, la estética general, los vestuarios, el maquillaje y la escenografía. Las situaciones comédicas son bastante creativas y divertidas, encajando perfectamente con el formato de sitcom. Hasta que en el tercer episodio, tras un evento extraño, la "serie dentro de la serie", se vuelve a color y comienza una nueva "fase" en esta historia.
The plot runs with all the characteristics of a TV sitcom. Wanda and Vision are trying to adapt to this new neighborhood called Westview, trying to appear as normal as possible. They have a routine, idyllic life and their problems are as superfluous and silly as those of any sitcom. As each episode passes, time begins to pass by at a dizzying pace and there are more and more signs that something is off in Westview. Everything unfolds in a very organic and original way, everything feels very well executed and the cinematography in these episodes is incredible. Everything feels very in keeping with the era they depict, the overall aesthetic, the costumes, makeup and set design. The comedic situations are quite creative and funny, fitting the sitcom format perfectly. Until in the third episode, after a strange event, the "series within the series", it turns to color and a new "phase" in this story begins.
La historia: Conflicto | The story: Conflict
Tras el tercer episodio, las cosas comienzan a tornarse cada vez más extrañas. Comienza a quedar clarísimo que "Westview" representa una especie de lugar ajeno al resto del mundo. Las leyes de este lugar no tienen sentido y el tiempo es sumamente relativo. Wanda queda embarazada y da a luz en cuestión de horas, este tipo de sucesos comienzan a hacer que Vision, con su chispa de sentido común, comience a entender que las cosas no son lo que parecen. Tras el momento en el que todo cobra color, el tiempo comienza a pasar vertiginosamente y el formato de la "serie dentro de la serie" se vuelve como de los 70s. La tecnología comienza a cambiar, el vestuario y la estética general, todo se adapta a los 70s. Un nuevo personaje, que fue presentado en el segundo episodio, se encuentra envuelta en las situaciones comédicas que toman lugar en la serie, hasta que de repente esta personaje comienza a actuar de forma extraña y parece saber más de lo que Wanda quisiera.
After the third episode, things start to get stranger and stranger. It begins to become very clear that "Westview" represents a kind of place that is alienated to the rest of the world. The laws of this place are meaningless and time is highly relative. Wanda becomes pregnant and gives birth in a matter of hours, these types of events begin to make Vision, with his spark of common sense, begin to understand that things are not what they seem. After the moment when everything becomes colorful, time begins to pass very fast and the format of the "series within the series" becomes like the 70s. The technology begins to change, the costumes and general aesthetics, everything adapts to the 70s. A new character, who was introduced in the second episode, finds herself involved in the comedic situations that take place in the series, until suddenly this character begins to act strangely and seems to know more than Wanda would like.
Este personaje resulta ser Monica Rambeau, una de las tantas víctimas del desastre ocurrido en Infinity War. Luego del tercer episodio, descubrimos que Wanda tiene reclusos a todos los habitantes de Westview, que la existencia general del lugar, el comportamiento de todos y el pasar del tiempo, está siendo manejado por Wanda a través de sus poderes. El cuarto episodio toma un salto hacia atrás en el tiempo y nos cuenta la historia de Monica y cómo fue asignada por SWORD, la organización a la que le es encomendada la misión de descubrir qué está sucediendo en Westview. Monica entra por accidente dentro del "campo de fuerza" que rodea a Westview y se convierte en uno de los títeres de Wanda. Mientras, desde fuera, SWORD intenta comprender lo que sucede y rescatar a Monica, mientras observan lo que sucede adentro a través de televisores viejos.
This character turns out to be Monica Rambeau, one of the many victims of the disaster that occurred in Infinity War. After the third episode, we discover that Wanda is holding all the inhabitants of Westview, that the general existence of the place, everyone's behavior and the passing of time, is being managed by Wanda through her powers. The fourth episode takes a leap back in time and tells us the story of Monica and how she was assigned by SWORD, the organization that is given the mission to find out what is going on in Westview. Monica accidentally enters the "force field" surrounding Westview and becomes one of Wanda's puppets. Meanwhile, from the outside, SWORD tries to understand what is going on and rescue Monica, while they watch what is happening inside through old televisions.
Tras el episodio cuatro, las cosas dentro del "Hex" (nombre que le da Darcy Lewis, parte de la operación comandada por SWORD, al campo de fuerza dentro del que se encuentra Westview) comienzan a perder sentido. Vision se entera de que Wanda es responsable de lo que sucede adentro y se encuentra a sí mismo sometido a el flujo de los acontecimientos, los cuales dejan de responder a la lógica. El formato de la serie sigue cambiando, cada vez volviéndose más moderna. Y desde fuera, los conflictos comienzan a presentarse. El líder de la misión resulta ser alguien corrupto y la salvación de Wanda y el Hex quedan de parte de Monica y algunos aliados. Suceden todo tipo de cosas y la serie comienza a perder un poco el tinte comédico. Esta parte de la serie, entre los episodios cuatro y siete, son para mí, el punto álgido de la serie. Ya que el formato de sitcom y todo el asunto de la "serie dentro de la serie" y los acontecimientos externos a Westview, se fusionan y dan paso a sucesos muy interesantes y ejecutados de formas muy ingeniosas. Existen infinidad de quiebres de la cuarta pared, hay cambios en el radio de aspecto, hay cortes extraños y demás cosas en el formato que encajan con esta fusión que se da entre lo "real" y lo que Wanda quiere que veamos.
After episode four, things inside the "Hex" (the name given by Darcy Lewis, part of the operation commanded by SWORD, to the force field inside which Westview is located) begin to lose sense. Vision learns that Wanda is responsible for what happens inside and finds himself subjected to the flow of events, which cease to respond to logic. The format of the series continues to change, becoming more and more modern. And from the outside, conflicts begin to present themselves. The leader of the mission turns out to be corrupt and the salvation of Wanda and the Hex is left to Monica and some allies. All sorts of things happen and the series begins to lose a bit of its comedic style. This part of the series, between episodes four and seven, are for me, the high point of the series. The sitcom format and the whole "series within the series" thing and the events outside of Westview merge and give way to very interesting and cleverly executed events. There are plenty of fourth wall breaks, there are changes in the aspect ratio, there are weird cuts and other things in the format that fit with this fusion that happens between the "real world" and what Wanda wants us to see.
La historia: Desenlace | The story: Conclusion
En la recta final, un villano repentino aparece. Los giros de tuerca reales comienzan a suceder y por fin entendemos cómo sucedió todo lo que toma lugar en la serie. Cómo Westview es una especie de forma de escapar de la realidad en la muerte de Vision y el intento desesperado de Wanda por aferrarse a él. Pero las cosas le salen mal, porque no solo están intentando detenerla desde fuera, si no que también, alguien ha estado observándola y manipulándola desde dentro. A partir de este punto, el formato de "serie dentro de la serie" se pierde y todo lo que sucede se comprende dentro de un mismo universo.
In the endgame, a sudden villain appears. The real twists and turns start to happen and we finally understand how everything that takes place in the series happened. How Westview is sort of a way to escape reality of Vision's death and Wanda's desperate attempt to hold on to him. But things go wrong for her, because not only are they trying to stop her from the outside, but also, someone has been watching and manipulating her from the inside. From this point on, the "series within the series" format is lost and everything that happens is understood within the same universe.
En mi opinión, este es el punto en el que, lamentablemente, la serie comienza a perder un poco de fuerza. Comenzando por lo más obvio, uno de los principales atractivos de WandaVision es su formato de "serie dentro de serie" y al perderse, la historia comienza a ser más como lo que esperarías regularmente viniendo de Marvel. Ahora, queda de parte de cada quien y de su gusto por este tipo de obras. Aunque la serie logra atar cabos de una forma más o menos coherente y da un desenlace lógico, no deja de hacerme ruido como la magia que había estado teniendo la serie hasta el momento, se pierde un poco y se siente como un conflicto muy cliché dentro de lo que Marvel suele mostrar en sus historias. No digo que sea un mal final, pero definitivamente fue uno que dejó qué desear.
In my opinion, this is the point where, unfortunately, the series starts to lose a bit of steam. Starting with the most obvious things, one of the main attractions of WandaVision is its "series within a series" format and as it's lost at this point, the story starts to be more like what you would regularly expect coming from Marvel. Now, it's up to the individual and their taste for this type of work. Although the series manages to tie up ends in a more or less coherent way and gives a logical denouement, it doesn't stop feeling kind of different in a bad way, as the magic that had been having the series so far, is lost a little on what feels like a very cliché conflict within what Marvel usually shows in their stories. I'm not saying it's a bad ending, but it was definitely one that left something to be desired.
Conocer el pasado de Wanda, un poco más a fondo, hace que esta serie sea bastante valiosa para la construcción del UCM en general. Ciertamente, los sucesos que toman lugar son bastante importantes para las historias que van a darse en los próximos lanzamientos de Marvel. Sin embargo, WandaVision durante un tiempo fue considerada una joya del UCM debido a su interesantísima ejecución. Gracias a ello, la audiencia se encontró bastante dividida con la conclusión de esta historia. Hay a quienes les gustó, ya que tal vez, les guste bastante el formato general de Marvel y habrán quienes quedaron un poco decepcionados al ver cómo la serie se convirtió en "otra historia de Marvel". Lamentablemente, yo formo parte de este último bando, sin embargo, esto no anula todas las cosas buenas que esta serie tiene. Así que, tras un combate muy típico de superhéroes en la fase final, una especie de redención y Wanda aceptando los errores que cometió, la serie nos deja con un final abierto, a la espera de cuales serán los próximos acontecimientos que involucrarán a Wanda.
Getting to know Wanda's past, a little more in depth, makes this series quite valuable to the construction of the MCU in general. Certainly, the events that take place are quite important to the stories that are to come in Marvel's upcoming releases. However, WandaVision for a while was considered a gem of the MCU due to its very interesting execution. Thanks to that, audiences found themselves quite divided with the conclusion of this story. There are those who liked it, as perhaps, they quite like the general Marvel format and there are those who were a bit disappointed to see how the series became "just another Marvel story". Sadly, I am part of the latter camp, however, this does not negate all the good things this series has going for it. So, after a very typical superhero fight in the final phase, a sort of redemption and Wanda accepting the mistakes she made, the series leaves us with an open ending, waiting for what will be the next events involving Wanda.

Entonces, ¿pienso que WandaVision es una buena serie? Pues sí, no está mal. A ver, de por sí, aunque yo no sea un gran fan del UCM, me he visto todas sus películas y aunque no considero a las obras pertenecientes a este universo como obras maestras, sí me parece que funcionan perfectamente bien como historias emocionantes, entretenidas y divertidas. WandaVision es un poco más que esto, lo cual es refrescante. La cosa es que la primera mitad de la serie te hace esperar que mantenga esa calidad y en mi opinión, no lo logra. Pero eso no le quita todo el mérito y aún logra ser una obra que vale bastante la pena. La cinematografía en general es bastante buena, sobre todo cuando está estilizada para adaptarse al formato de la serie. Las actuaciones están más que bien, la música funciona a la perfección y todo es lo suficientemente coherente (al menos para mí, que no soy un fan acérrimo del UCM, tal vez un fan empedernido encuentre incoherencias, pero ese no soy yo). En fin, WandaVision sí vale la pena, es una historia de superhéroes un poco distinta y con una ejecución interesantísima. Si estás interesado en ella y conoces lo suficientemente el mundo del UCM, la recomiendo, solo no te emociones demasiado. Por esto y muchas cosas más, WandaVision se lleva un...
So, do I think WandaVision is a good series? Well, yes, it's not bad. Let's see, even though I'm not a big fan of the MCU, I've seen all of its movies and while I don't consider the works belonging to this universe to be masterpieces, I do find them to work perfectly well as exciting, entertaining and fun stories. WandaVision is a bit more than this, which is refreshing. The thing is, the first half of the series makes you expect it to maintain that quality and in my opinion, it fails to do so. But that doesn't take away all the merit and it still manages to be a pretty worthwhile piece of work. The cinematography in general is quite good, especially when stylized to fit the format of the series. The performances are more than fine, the music works perfectly and everything is coherent enough (at least for me, not a diehard MCU fan, maybe a diehard fan will find inconsistencies, but that's not me). Anyway, WandaVision is indeed worth your time, it's a slightly different superhero story with a very interesting execution.
