My answer: Pretty much, yes.
To back it up a little, I recently got my blood work done and I am Vitamin D and Iron deficient. Naturally, 2 thoughts came into my head.. 1) how am I Vitamin D deficient when I live literally steps from the beach? 2) besides Vitamin D and Iron supplements, should I be taking any other ones? I then scour the Internet to find my answer.. and here's what I came up with:
The supplement industry is an under-regulated monster that mostly drains money from people's wallets. It's marketed through fear. And the industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that's still growing rapidly.
The truth is, there is no reason to take any supplement unless a doctor has prescribed it to you for a specific condition or deficiency. Absent that exception, the very best you can hope for from supplements is that they will cost you money. Additionally, you may also get damaged because supplements often have different amounts or different ingredients than on the label or even unknown adulterants.
If you eat well balanced meals, including plenty of vegetables and fruits, you'll get all the vitamins you need. Do animals, birds, etc take any vitamin pills? Of course not. Because they get it from the food they consume.
