Hi folk! I recently ran into some software problems: Ledger-CLI wasn't working well for how much I was doing with crypto and alt-coins. (Not speculative investing, but just, getting Hive through posting and stuff. It's pennies, but I still want to record it in my ledgers, since it's meaningful to my "economic" activity, anyway.)
Because of that, I wasn't posting here very much, even though I was intending to. Hopefully, that'll change going forward and I can start posting more into Hive! (That said, I'm still not sure which platforms on the Hive blockchain I prefer. I'm writing this to be on emsenn.dblog.org, but I'm not sure that's where I'll stay! Luckily, the posts are pretty well accessible regardless of what Hive platform any one person chooses to use!.)
(Actually! I switched off Dblog because it's not letting me post, so right now I'm using the Ecency frontend, which also has... a sensible way of presenting Hive? Like, I might actually start to understand communities after this!
Now that I'm back to Hive, I want to start off by doing something fun. I've played a few hands of Splinterlands, but... I'm either not very good at it, or need better cards. I'm definitely going to keep playing, but it's going to require a lot more active effort before I can passively play that.
There's another game that caught my eye - I've always loved city-builders, and so dCity sounded quite appealing. I spent a few of the Hive I bought last week on buying a couple cards... and then minutes later saw a post announcing a grant for new players! I applied, and [won]@boycharliefamily/here-are-the-winners-of-our-second-dcity-sim-grant-ost-tokens-will-be-distributed-for-next-round-of-gaming-grants)!
So, now I'm going to try and decide to do with my grant money. I'm going to start by reading that thread, announcing the winners, where @boycharliefamily answers everyone's questions, and then comparing that to the game's manual, until things make sense!
OP's advice to me is to keep low crime, and mint 1st edition cards while I can. So, that's what I'm going to do. I'm expecting that trying to strategize much this early, with this few resources, won't be too successful, so I'm simply going to see what cards I end up with, and see what affect that has on my city.
Oh! Before I do that, let me say what cards currently make up my city: a luxury home, a zoo, and a shopping mall. I made a joke that right now, my city is like a little Disneyland!
So, I was able to mint four new cards, which got me two basic homes, a circus, and a cinema. Really is feeling like a tourist town! One of these, the cinema, does decrease crime, so that's nice!
I don't really know enough about dCity to do more right now - But!
I think it's worth mentioning that I've been tracking all this blockchain stuff using Beancount, a text-based accounting software.
For example, here's what the entry for my last play session looks like:
2021-02-22 * "dCity" "Mint 4 1st-edition cards"
Assets:US:Hive:SIM -0.01 SIM {0.00205 USD, 2021-02-20}
Assets:US:Hive:SIM -3199.99 SIM {0.00205 USD, 2021-02-21}
Assets:US:Hive:DCity 2 NFT-HIVE-DCITY-1-BHOME {0.12 USD}
Assets:US:Hive:DCity 1 NFT-HIVE-DCITY-1-CIRCUS {0.57 USD}
Assets:US:Hive:DCity 1 NFT-HIVE-DCITY-1-CINEMA {0.98725 USD}
Expenses:Recreation:Gaming:Blockchain:DCity
This shows that all-in-all, at current market-prices, minting the cards was a loss of $4.76, starting with $6.56 of SIM. But, considering they're exchanged for a "permanent" income from the game, and it's a game, that's a fair depreciation on buying a booster pack, I think: getting roughly 20% of the cash value in cards from a booster pack is, by my memory, far higher than is the case with games like Pokemon or Magic: the Gathering.
Anyway, maybe this post was really boring, but I'm finding it fascinating to view all this blockchain economy stuff with the seriousness of the centralized economy, and keeping a ledger of it is a good way for that, in my experience!
