And, as I see it, the more we break away from other people, disconnect, hide behind screens and only look to maximise ourselves, the less shame and guilt we will feel, and the more bad behaviour we will engage in.

I know you're not religious but I do feel like this is one of the drawbacks of turning away from Christianity.
