In the future it may be hard to explain to a later generation that there was a time when busines and Innovation went hand in hand. Successful businesses solved real problems and generally made life better for everyone. Business founders and companies got excited about the possibility of solving real life problems with their products and innovations.
That all seems like a distant time in the past these days. The business model that once had the potential of revolutionising the World seems to have taken a backseat to the attention war. Every so called innovation these days is built with the motive of getting and keeping consumers addicted rather than their lives better. It's funny how this is being led by the biggest companies in the World, who have the most funding and an obligation to the World I believe.
I think major companies realize that a space where the innovation is capturing people's attention will ultimately experience a pushback. There will ultimately be a pushback against this type of crass consumerism and we're seeing it already by some who have managed to will their way out of the magnetic pull that is a consumerist society. Yet businesses seem determined more than ever to win the attention war. There is probably more funding, research and development that goes in there than actual product improvement. I just can't prove it.
Taking back our ability and option to choose is one things we'll have to figure out going forward. Maybe it'll take a generational shift, kind of how there is less drinking these days by seemingly everyone. Whatever it is, we need to cease being the products for companies that have little interest in making our lives better.
