There is politics in every setting, and the corporate space is no different. One quickly realises upon joining that the options are quite straightforward, either play along or ignore. Each one has its merits and demerits, but the most obvious from a choice to ignore is the danger of sticking out like a sore thumb. This is especially true if the majority is already engulfed in this practice.
Choosing to participate may mean pandering to senior colleagues and accomodating their excesses. In some instances, it requires a display of 'loyalty' to show others the merits and demerits of our choices. While I don't fault the choices of others, I am of the opinion that this creates an avenue for certain people to be treated better than others based on parameters other than competence.
Yet it is a character flaw of life. We certainly do not look at each other equally talk less of treating one another same. There are always sentiments backing our every viewpoint that ultimately shapes our thoughts and judgement. We are political and sentimental by nature (because we seek acceptance?) and this has been amplified in modern society.
The choices are to either insert ourselves in the game or to opt out entirely. Of course every choice comes with its consequences. I personally don't play office politics but I do make it a duty to get along with my colleagues, especially my seniors. Sticking out like an outlier sometimes isn't just worth the hassle.
