As a sales person, convincing a client is usually regarded as some sort of superpower because it is. This is especially true for clients who do not have a natural predisposition or an opposition to what is being sold, because they are extremely difficult to convince.

I have observed that the possibility of closing out such complicated deals is not nearly as challenging as trying to win a socio-cultural argument in today's society. This is especially true if the issue is what you call a 'hot topic', and opinions have been formed along political, religious or cultural lines.

There is almost no convincing the next person, as the drivers of such opinions are emotions. The facts and the truth may be glaring, but you can never argue with how someone feels. That is where it gets complex. We have become too sensitised to our emotions to the point that we are now desensitized to the truth.

I am all for having tough, controversial conversations with people of varying opinions but am often weary of the circumstances and what the conversation hopes to achieve. That is why I expend my energy rather selectively on sensitive issues. It is important to have your way but remember that, more often than not, we won't have our way convincing the next person.
