One day, I was very surprised,at my duty post when a girl cried to me for some assistance. At first, I was furious thinking, she may have been beating up by one of these street boys; but having given her moment to explain what the matter was all about, I discovered I guessed wrongly and that the Girl was suffering from pains. Then I asked her what kind of pain she was suffering, that has placed her in such a terrible condition, all she could answer to me was “it is common to most girls and could put such Girls off normal daily activities it care is not taken”. She simply concluded by calling it “MENSTRUAL PAINS”. At this point I was full of so much questions to ask. What make the menstrual painful? Why is the menstrual painful? What can be done to avert the painfulness of the menstruation. Though my little drop of N20.00K for her to purchase some drugs was helpful, I find out that it could not provide a permanent solution to the problem. How can we get a permanent solution to this kind of problem that has chosen to torment our young girls / women? What is to be done for the oddly talented children in our society whom the schools cannot teach sex education? It was based on this research, I discovered that menstruation is a normal monthly blood flow, removal of endometrial cells from the womb with some blood through the vagina that is referred to as menstruation. But why is it painful? When I put this question to a Doctor he said that painful menstruation is in two forms those due to diseases and without underling disease.
PAINFUL PERIODS DUE TO DISEASE
This occurs when there is accumulated and prolonged disease in the urinary system which can involve the womb, if thus then pains will occur. The solution to this is to quickly see the Doctor for treatment of such diseases and I tell you the menstrual pain will stop.
PAINFUL PERIOD WITHOUT ANY UNDERLYING DISEASE
This type of period is primarily referred to as dysmenorrheal (dismenoria). Primary in the sense that the cause is unknown and besides, it is not due to any infections or disease.
WHAT A WOMAN SHOULD DO IF HAVING PRIMARY DYMEMORHEA
Though there is nothing wrong in having painful period but for more assurance, check-up and predication, it is wise to see a Doctor. But where there is no Doctor, or to relieve pains before the arrival of the Doctor, the following pain reliever may be useful.
- Panadol: Take 2 tabs 3 times a day for4 days
- Indocid: This is also very useful
if you are a woman having a painful period due to disease, please don't hesitate to see a Doctor for treatment to avoid possibly blockage of the fallopian tube.
SAFE PERIOD
A period is described safe in women when such a woman had intercourse on such days, and she is likely not to get pregnant. Furthermore, a period that is safe for madam 'A' may not really be safe with madam 'B' simply because the determinant of this safe period which is the menstrual cycle varies from one woman to the other. So that when such dates are known, sexual intercourse avoided, unwanted pregnancy will be guided against. It actually has to do with self control and discipline of oneself in the area of sex.
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
When a woman experiences bleeding 28th of the month, it does not mean such a woman shall continue to experience such bleeding every 28th of every month; rather, that in such a woman, 28 days will elapse before bleeding could be experienced again.
This monthly period as it is often called in other word, menstrual cycle is experienced by every reproductive woman. This cycle varies; some women see theirs every 28, 30 to 35 days.
Meanwhile, menstrual cycle that occurs every 22 days could also be said as normal as well as those of 35 days. But any menstrual cycle that is below 22 days or those above 35 are abnormal and such a woman need not to hesitate to see a physician i. e a doctor for a possible correction to it.
When menstruation is 22-25 days, such menstrual cycle is referred to as short, while menstrual cycle that ranges from 26-35 are referred to as long period.
Some women that have short menstrual cycle could experience menstruation twice in a month. This is very normal, for example; a woman who experiences 24 days menstrual cycle is very likely to see her period twice a month, let say on the 4th and experience it again on the 28th of the same month. This is very normal. It is not really important the date you see your menstruation rather the number of days that elapses before the bleeding comes again. lt is very important for women to have a jotter or diary and record the dates of her menstruation, if well recorded, the gynecologist couid through that tell when a woman is likely to take in, determine the sex of the baby as well as determining cases of infertility and causes. It should be stressed that sexual intercourse on the dot of “OVULATiON’ is very likely to result a male child.
Since during ovulation period, the male sperm which is the {Y sperm) moves faster than the female sperm which is the (X sperm} finding its way into the ovum of the woman thereby resulting a baby boy.
NOTE: Menstruation is absolutely different from ovulation.
MENSTRUATION
Is the removal of endoemetrical cells and some blood from the uterus through the vagina. This occurs monthly every normal woman of age.
OVULATION
This is defined as a process whereby women's egg I. e ovum is released from the ovary of the woman.
SPECIMEN: CALCULATED 28 DAY MENSTRUAL CYCLE FROM 20 SEPT - 18th OCTOBER (LONG MENSTRUAL CYCLE)
The Diagram above illustrates 28 day menstrual cycle of a woman whose bleeding began on the 20th of September and stopped after 5 days interval which is 24th day of September. The bleeding which is referred to as menstruation is still as defined above, is followed by 6 days; this 6 days is a free zone, a period when a woman could have sexual intercourse and may possibly not get pregnant. Four (4) days after that free zone is a danger period; a day after is referred to as ovulation day, 4 days after that ovulation day is also a danger period; from here to when bleeding starts again, the woman is free to have sexual intercourse without possibly getting pregnant.
SPECIMEN OF CALCULATED 22 DAY MENSTRUAL CYCLE; FROM 20TH JANUARY-12TH FEBRUARY
The bleeding of this woman started on the 20th day of January and lasted till 25th day of January. To get the ovulation date of this woman, simple Arithmetic will be done. Add nine days to the twentieth day bleeding began, you will certainly get 29. So the 29th day of January is likely ovulation day for this woman. in other word, you could as well calculate thus; minus 14 days from the days of the menstrual cycle of such woman, the date you get is likely the day of ovulation for that woman. Example for this woman above, 22-14 = 9; now add 9 days to the date bleeding started, you will certainly get at 29th January. This is likely the ovulation day for the woman.
Women who have this type of menstrual cycle i.e. short menstrual cycle, must be very careful to observe the mandatory four days before ovulation and four days after ovulation before they every have sexual intercourse; else pregnancy may occur ever while under menstruation. This woman is free to have sexual intercourse from the 3rd day of February to 11m day of February before bleeding starts on the 12‘”. She may likely not get pregnant.
Meanwhile, not all women can benefit from this sage period as in some women, menstruation is irregular, making it impossible to really say when menstruation will occur. For example a woman that experiences menstrual cycle of 23 days. Experiences it again after the expiration of 29 days, this month, if she experience it again after the expiration of 25 days, then such a woman should know she experiences menstrual cycles that is irregular, and such a woman will need to see a Doctor or Gynecologist for possible correction.
