”Good morning, ma", Phunky said as she walk towards the kitchen. "You were asleep before I returned from work yesterday and I didn't want to disturb you". "Thanks, my dear. Keji and l stayed up till around l0p.m before we went to bed. Did you forget that you had promised us that you would come home from the gallery before leaving for the office yesterday?” "No, I didn't forget, but I was delayed at the gallery for too long and l was too confused that I felt I should just go and relax in my office before my Patients arrive". "What happened? Did anyone upset you?" "No, mum, just that I saw someone I didn't expect to see". ”Who?... Oh, you are frowning? If you don't want to talk about it, "no problem.l just hope all is well with you"
"No, mum, it's just that it was something l was not prepared to handle". "Come on dear, you are much stronger than that. Nobody can upset you this much. Who or what did you see? “I met Dayo". 'Which Dayo?" "Dayo Balogun" “Keji's father? Where? When? How? “Yes, we met at the gallery" "How come?" "He is the new owner of the gallery"
Phunky's mother turned around with surprise written all over her face! "is that so?
Who told you that?" Phunky narrated her encounter with Dayo at the gallery and how the manager told her that Dayo was the new owner of the gallery. She
also explained how Dayo tried hard to make peace with her and how she vehemently refused. Phunky's mother looked up with a frown.
"Phunky! What did you just say? How many times have I asked you to learn to control your anger? You still don't want to learn. Anger destroys. lt breeds nothing but unhappiness. It is never a way out of troubles. It is created by hurt and promoted by arrogance. Those who lament with expressions like "he abused me, he betrayed me, he cheated me" never find joy“. "But mummy".
"No buts. I am not saying that you must go
back to him; what l am saying is that you should
consider Keji's future. At least, he is his dad".
"Well, he doesn't know that I have his child" "What? So, he didn't know all these years?" "Yes, mum" “But you told me that he knew, but he wanted you to remove the pregnancy and since you didn't agree with him, he left you?". "Well, er“ 'Well, what?... what other lies have you told me? What other truths have you hidden? "It‘s not so, mummy.
l only lied so that you could pity my plight. The truth is that neither he nor I knew of the pregnancy at the time he left". ”So, the young man did not betray you?“. "He did mum, he did" "How?"
"He told me that he would never leave me; he promised to marry me after my studies; he said he would stay in Lagos for six months and that he would be coming to see me from time to time, but he left before six months and never came back”. "Have you asked him why?” "No, but he tried to explain yesterday but l was really mad at him. He was only trying to make excuses and I can't just imagine myself falling for such". "Phunky! I know you are an adult now but I am more experienced than you in worldly matters".
Phunky sighed and threw up her arms In despair "Mummy, I am not saying that I am as experienced as you are, all I am saying is that I am no Ionger
interested in Dayo". "who says you must be interested in him? That‘s not what I am saying.
l just want you to think like on adult. You still sulk like a secondary school girl. If you don't want him, face him and tell him that you had a child for him and that despite that, you are going to marry someon else. if he is a man of honour, he'll either leave you alone or win you back with his child". "Amen".
A familiar voice sounded at the doorway, Dayo stood smiling at the entrance of the apartment where Phunky and her mother live. Phunky turned around with a mixture of shock and surprise on her face. she was locked up in silence.
