One afternoon, while hawking on the street, a school bus packed for the pupils returning from excursion to buy things for refreshment.
The pupils were returning from an excursion to the popular Ampitan Water Falls. It was a popular tourist centre where people especially tourists visited regularly. The tourist center was well equipped and different people from all walks of life regularly visited the place especially during holidays. It was really a beautiful place to behold.
Johnson moved closer and sold pure water to them. He was indeed depressed at the way they behaved and organized themselves in a sociable manner even at their young age.
Suddenly, Johnson began to feel inferior after realizing that they spoke better English and were also better exposed. He wanted to join them because they were his age mates but he was shy. He thought that they would mock him.
Suddenly, he summoned courage and approached one of them, "hi, how are you?"
"oh, I am fine"
"I am Johnson, what is your name?"
"I am Philip"
Luckily for him, Phillip was the captain of the students on excursion. He was very brilliant, loving and accommodating. Johnson asked how many questions which he patiently answered.
He also asked about the name of his school, and where they came from.
Phillip's father was very rich and highly connected. He exposed his children to good life both academically and morally. Obviously Phillip and his siblings were very brilliant and intelligent. It truly reflect in the kind of lives they were living.
Johnson was very impressed in Philip. He loved him and wished he was Philip. Meanwhile, Philip loved Johnson too. With the little interaction they had, he realized that he was intelligent. He also believed that he must be brilliant.
"aren't you a pupil?" Philip asked
"yes, I am I attend the only primary school in this community."
"is it of good standard"
"well, I think so but most of us here, especially those from poor hones and whose parents are not literate do not attach so much important of education."
"that serious? You should not be like that. Education is very important. Obviously, in it lies your future."
Phillip's words seem interesting to Johnson. So he listened with rapt attention. The few words he spoke touched him and he began to reason in a similar way. Unfortunately, it was time for the bus to take off and Phillip had to leave. Johnson enjoyed his company and wished the relationship would continue. Philip also wished the same but there was nothing he could do. Therefore, he collected Johnson's address with the promise that he would find time to visit him. He did confess to enjoying his company.
He as well gave Johnson his cell phone number that he could call him at anytime. Philip's comments continued to re-echo in Johnson's mind. His orientation began to charge as he began to change as he began to see reasons why he must embrace education and not thuggery. He became relieved and happy.
