One day, johnson decided to speak to his friend Benson about the wrong step he had taken. That day he met him at the central motor park, called him to a corner and they discussed.
Despite his efforts to convince Benson he would not yield. Benson continued to give filmsy excuses to back his actions. He was deeply engrossed in several bad habits and found it extremely difficult to change. Actually, he was enjoying himself. He had money to spend and also enjoyed independence.
Instead, he adviced Johnson to come and join them so that he could start to enjoy the good life which he claimed he was enjoying. They parted soon.
Johnson became very close to Mr. Barney. Mr. Barney continued to take him in extra mural lessons after school hours. He advised Johnson to cultivate the habits of listening to news and reading wide. He told him that those habits would increase his knowledge and help polish his speaking ability. Johnson yielded to his advice and continued to get better both academically and in his speaking ability.
It was time to write the common entrance examination. Johnson prepared very well for it. Therefore throughout the examination period, he had a good time and was sure of an outstanding result.
Few months later, the result was released. As expected, Johnson had one of the best result of that year. He was very happy. Mr. Barney and other teachers celebrated with him because, he made the school proud.
A week later, his parents sat him down and reminded him that it was time to be enrolled as an apprentice where he would become a mechanic's apprentice. Surprisingly, Johnson had long forgotten the idea. Going to school was the most important thing in his mind.
His new orientation had made him see far into the future. So he preferred education. At that juncture he pleaded with his parents to support him in his new vision. His father understood him but he was handicapped because he was poor.
In fact, he confessed to believe in him because he knew he would make the family proud.
Despite that, Johnson was full of hope. He was determined to be educated and was sure that help would come for him. He pleaded with his father to give him some time to know what step to take next.
During the long vacation before admission letter was issued, he thought of how he could help himself. He realized the sale of sachet water alone would not sustain his vision. Therefore, he decided to look for a better job at Ajegunle. He told his father about his plans which he agreed to. He further advised him to take things easy.
The following day, he travelled to Ajegunle in search of any available job. Luckily, he got one as a shop attendant in a supermarket. He was paid give thousand naira monthly.
He soon started the work. Everyday, he woke up very early, got dressed up for work and left immediately. He always got to work early despite the long distance he had to go every morning. No one believed he came from Surulere. Although it was not that convenient because he often spent almost half of his money on transportation and feeding, he persisted. Despite that, he ensured that he saved half of his salary every month.
Meanwhile, his boss was watching him with keen interest because he was hardworking, honest, punctual, and did not get himself involved in any dirty deal.
Johnson in his place of work even his age was referred to as a utility staff simply because he could work in any section of the shop.
Gradually, his boss began to develop interest in him. She gave him gifts and later increased his salary. Johnson was really happy working with his boss.
