NightFury-3.jpg

I have no idea why I thought that an articulated NightFury might be a good photography subject. Maybe it was the idea of contrasting between her snow white against the black with her ice blue eyes. It didn't really matter which way I posed her, I felt like these were lacking somehow.

The first photo I thought was the best at relaying personality, but in terms of composition, I felt this one below was probably better.

In the first one she looks curious and intrigued but in this one she just looks strong and a bit menacing and with her little foot up she seems to be thinking about a flight run up with eager focus and concentration.

I took a huge range of photos and there were some ridiculous ones where she met a shy sprouted onion. I haven't included those images here because they were more comic relief than photography and I was just messing around. The onion has subsequently unfortunately left the building after going moldy. Nightfury doesn't know.

In this one she looks relaxed. I like that she's gazing off into the distance and her brow is shaded nicely as well as her lower jaw. I have no idea what she's looking at. What do you think it is?

I realised that I hadn't got any of the beautiful metallic sheen on her wings so that was what I focused on with the last image but I tell you, it was probably the most challenging. I was trying to capture the 3D concertina effect of the moulded wings with the lighting. I don't have a light ring or anything mobile, so the only way I could do it was by moving her around from one place to another and experimenting with the lighting. I liked that the lighting was bouncing off the metallic flecks and also showed up her calf muscle and ran along the curve of her tail.

It was a really strange subject for me and it's always nice to learn new techniques by trial and error. I think I accomplished that. What would you have done differently?

I also picked up a figurine of an Orc Lietenant from Lord of the Rings recently which might be my next subject. It's much smaller and I don't know how well I'll be able to capture the details. I suppose I'll see how it develops.

โ€œA loud clatter of gunk music flooded through the Heart of Gold cabin as Zaphod searched the sub-etha radio wave bands for news of himself. The machine was rather difficult to operate. For years radios had been operated by means of pressing buttons and turning dials; then as the technology became more sophisticated the controls were made touch-sensitive" - HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy
