A little while ago I stumbled on a trail of songs which led me to this one which has a very strange backstory. Nobody actually knows exactly what the name of the song is, although it was dubbed Like the Wind by a guy called Darius who apparently recorded it on a cassette tape (remember those?) off a German radio station in the 1980's.
The recording was only half a minute or so long and he and his sister spent two decades trying to track down the song. There are a few people who have tried to claim it as their own but there is no proof as to who actually recorded it and to this day, is still known as the most mysterious song on the internet. This is a remastered instrumental version (I don't like the guy's voice that sings it)...
It got me thinking about some of the songs from my younger days when we didn't have the immediate joys of the internet to simply say "shazam" and then the song pops up. You'd hear a part of a song you liked and then spend days, sometimes weeks with it in your head waiting for it to play on the radio so you could do what Darius did and scramble for a tape out of your tower of recordables, shove it in the tape deck and press record, just hoping and praying that you weren't taping over another one of your favourites and later cursing yourself because you had.
This song I had to look up because it used to play when I was ice skating. It was a big hit at the rink with the hockey players and of course I wanted to know who it was by. I had never heard of Ultravox (who sang the original) and being of a non religious nature, I was quite disappointed to learn that it was actually called Hymn and then when I actually heard all the words, it made more sense. I had a laugh listening to this when writing this post because this is just such a ridiculous song and the music video is extremely risqu茅 when paired with the wording.
Here's another one that took me a while to track down in a similar fashion. I saw this movie in theatre when it came out and I liked one of the songs, I waited for the credits but they were rolling too fast and I missed the name of the song or who sang it.
I had to wait months for when it came out on DVD to check what the song was. These days we have it so easy. We have very little mystery or the ability to be patient and solve things like this with delayed satisfaction, it's now all at our fingertips. Kids no longer have to look up words in a Thesaurus to find an alternative and when last did you see anyone doing a crossword puzzle over the space of a week?
I still like this track, it's great even all these years later, I'm glad I found it again. What do you think of these?
