And yes everything is a learning, in your case both you, and your wife learned something new and it is that experience of going for a walk in nature with the kids. When you have young children trips are a real challenge as you rightly point out because of the planning and all that they involve but it is also a beautiful and enjoyable experience especially when it is for them to discover something new.
