We had a mooch around a local gritstone outcrop called the Black Rocks today. After all the rain of yesterday, it was nice to get back out into the sunshine.
We made our way up the steep hill where there was a path at the back of the rocks that led us to the top. There was some lovely views below of the Derwent Valley.
If you like rock climbing,
you can enjoy your activity on the Black Rocks themselves.
You also have to share the trail with cyclists, dog walkers, foragers and people who are orienteering.
After looking around the rocks and taking in the views, we made our way back down and walked along the trail for awhile. You can do nice woodland walks that are signposted or just make your own way.
We came across an old corrugated iron structure. I'm not sure what is was used for, perhaps a shelter for pigs. It's a bit dilapidated now.
Lead was mined at the Black Rocks and you can still see the remains of a whim engine house and chimney. Source
It was a lovely place to spend a couple of hours, but there were options to walk further afield, if you wanted to explore more.
