I know not everyone likes Facebook, but thanks to the 'Disused WW2 Buildings and Airfields' group, I came across some information on Mushroom Pillbox Defence Bunkers. One bunker wasn't too far from us, so off we went. Unfortunately, it was in the middle of a farmer's field. Memories of childhood altercations with the village farmer popped into my mind. We kept to the side of the ploughed field and then hotfooted it into the middle, where the shelter was.
Cantilever Pillboxes (or Mushroom Pillboxes because of their shape) were built in 1940 - 1941 and used in World War II.
They were circular and slightly sunken into the ground. Being tall, having to crouch down and not being very nimble, made it a bit awkward to enter the shelter.
Just inside, there was a metal rail that would have hosted a machine gun. The rail went all the way round.
There wasn't a great deal to look at but it was still worth a visit, and part of history. I'm pleased this shelter has been allowed to stand. Quite a few have been demolished, which is a shame.
My brother took this photo as I scrambled to get back out.
On the way back, I had a moral dilemma. Do I tell him he had a mucky arse or not??
