I have an ongoing issue.
I could not find a discord so I am trying my luck here :)

Hive keychain is always the extension we use for login and transacting.
Somehow in the last 11 days we have more and more users having one identical issue.

I never could reproduce it on my own.

(window.hive_keychain) seems to be returning false for them, whereas others do not have the issue. The instruction is simple and the extension has same version (it is automatically updated anyway) so it sounded odd.

We had about 4 people reporting the problem thus far, and it appears on one browser or another not recognizing it.

The fix has always been: to reinstall extension and reimport their account. As if clearing the local storage fixed it!

Investigating this, you'll certainly have some solution, but I see Hive Engine includes this link on their homepage:

chrome-extension://jcacnejopjdphbnjgfaaobbfafkihpep/js/hive_keychain.js

... is it necessary?

On Hive Engine, I also see this line to test if we use keychain, instead of just using window.hive_keychain:

function useKeychain() { return window.hive_keychain && !localStorage.getItem('key'); }

... would it be necessary to?

I am just trying to have another answer to our users than "reinstall the extension and reimport your account". Even if it fixes it, it's tough to tell them that.

Is it possible their local storage expired or got wrong in last update?
