Hello everyone, the weekend is slowly coming to an end and I hope you all had the opportunity to make one or the other interesting experience! In my new post I would like to talk about art and share an experience I had in Athens.
During my stay in Athens I decided to visit the National Gallery and it's not the first time I visit art galleries during my travels and on almost every trip, I have learned something about the art of the respective country. If someone like art, you will get your entrance fee worth here and on three floors paintings from different eras can be admired and exactly how many works of art the collection contains, I can't tell exactly, but there are several thousand. The building itself is relatively new and the construction was oriented to Greek modernism and this is a good contrast to the otherwise predominantly old buildings which are located in the city and as I have noticed, the building was renovated a few years ago and the museum itself has been welcoming guests since 1976. Even if it's is a newer museum, the prehistory is already older and is also associated with the Bavarian King Otto (1815 - 1867) from the House of the Wittelsbachs who ruled Athens for some time and was known as a supporter of art and one of his art collections was an important basis for the the museum.
In addition to the collection of well-known Greek artists of the past and modern times, works by well-known artists from other countries such as Pablo Picasso, Goya and many others are also exhibited here. Another term for the museum is also pinacotheca and around it can be said that it's mainly about Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, however, as mentioned above, international artists can also be seen here. There is really a lot to see and I would plan at least two hours for the visit, but visitors can also stay there much longer and the entrance fee, which is about 5 to €10, depending on the option chosen, is really fair for what is offered. It's rather one of the attractions of the city which are not so mainstream and it is very easy to reach the location and can also be combined with other sights in this area. I was there relatively early right after the opening and except for two groups, there was relatively little going on and this is of course always a important factor to be able to look at the paintings in peace and especially friends of art, should not miss being here.
