She lived in a lilac forest all alone. She was very old, although she did not know about it, and now her whiteness did not resemble the carefree sea foam, but the snow sparkling in the rays of the moon. But her eyes were still alive and clear, and she moved easily, like the shadow of a cloud over the waves.
She was not at all like those one-horned horses that people draw in books and call unicorns. She was smaller than a horse, her hooves were cloven, and she was beautiful with that ancient and wild beauty that horses never had, which deer bashfully and unconvincingly imitate and goats parody in clownish parody. The long and slender neck made her head look smaller than it really was, and her mane, which fell almost to the middle of her back, was soft as fluff and light as smoke. She had pointed ears and slender legs with tufts of white hair at her ankles, a long horn above her eyes shone with mother-of-pearl light even at the dead of midnight. With it She killed dragons, healed kings and knocked down ripe chestnuts for cubs.
Unicorns are immortal. They live in solitude, usually in a forest near a backwater with clear water, in which you can see the reflection, because they are a little vain and know that there are no creatures in the world as beautiful and magical.
