Rex didn't want to play, he NEEDED to. Try as he might, he simply wasn't built to stay still for very long. Sadly, no matter how much he begged or how pitiful he made his puppy-dog eyes, all the old man did was grumble and pretend not to hear him.
I imagine that Rex has been given to the old man by his children to keep him company but he wishes they would visit more instead. I like to think that both the man and the dog will eventually find common ground and become friends.
