I like how you framed it just right on the sense that art should instill some sense of wonder and mystery. For me, I love pieces that make me laugh, are a little ironic or gives me a sense of stillness (think blank black canvas, abstract art). I like Rothko, contemporary's like Peter Joseph, 60’s pop art, recently Kentaro Yamada.

I'm not a gamer, but I love some old school games (street fighter on genesis sega and pac man arcade), I grew up watching my uncle and cousins play games (also never letting me play because they don't want to be bothered) and to be honest never saw it as art inspiration, but looking at Yoshitaka Amano work, I think i should pay more attention to the visuals in video games… it has such an otherworldly feel, a little sinister but also lots of light. Very complex and I like it!

I also love woodblock art and never knew that the process was so time consuming and intricate until very recently. I cannot believe one painting can take up to a dozen separately craved woods blocks. Have you heard of the 69 post stations of the Kisokaido? You might find that interesting.
