And somewhere in the books, I read that an Almighty being sent his most beloved son to fulfill the sacrifice and be able to split history in two: Before and after him, the rest we already know and according to our convictions, we profess some belief. On this occasion, we are not here to talk about religion; we will rather talk about something that has always been present to teach us and we have been stubborn in learning: Sacrifice.
What is sacrifice?
On the internet there are many definitions of the word "sacrifice" as well as interesting stories and tales that give us signs of said definition. But of all, in the first paragraph of this publication, we locate the most passionate and most recognized story in the world.
In addition to knowing, this raises a personal question in our lives. Do we understand what sacrifice is? In simple terms, it's about giving something valuable or making a human effort and commitment with humility and passion to achieve a goal, something like giving the most important thing or giving everything, to fulfill a specific mission, and that mission fills us with satisfaction, peace, and happiness.
A close, tangible, and worthy example: The sacrifice we experienced when, many times in times of crisis, Mom stopped eating dinner because there were only three loaves of bread in the pantry and there were only four of us at home with Mom. We grow up, and the sacrifice always continues, because it remains, even if many don't understand it. Many do it for their loved ones; some do it out of personal discretion, others for an institution or a third party. It's something known as personal satisfaction, or in some jobs, they call it emotional salary; this is a product of our dedication.
From my own experience, in practice, I sacrificed a lot with that premise of feeling happy. Giving everything for something that fills our soul involves thinking a lot, planning excessively, and acting at one hundred percent. Sometimes we have to guard against excesses, because we stay up late, sleep little, work too much, and put at risk the most precious treasure we have: our health.
We want immediate success without giving anything in return, the minimum effort for the maximum glory. We complain about so much and perhaps give too little. In this fair introspection, what's left to do? Did we give enough? Did we sacrifice too little? If these questions make noise, perhaps we lack the passion and sacrifices. I once studied at a university, and for financial reasons, I only had two pairs of pants to wear. Even though I was surrounded by classmates who had better incomes than me, I understood that it wasn't just about looks when it came to studying; here it was about passing.
I was very afraid of public speaking, but I understood that it was about preparing ourselves and facing the challenges. There were many late nights, sacrificing youth parties, revelry, and sharing because there was a life commitment. This was evident when attending university on the weekends and getting good grades.
Later, I had experience as a teacher and understood that the outlook for success was the same. Participants who were better off economically and socially than me, and on the contrary, immersed in their conversations in "classes" and the distraction of their "cell phones," contributed little or nothing to their own learning. Some even went so far as to blackmail people with things like, "If the teacher keeps demanding, we'll drop out of the course," and so on. If this is the case in a public institution, I don't want to imagine what it will be like in private ones.
In Latin culture, we still take the easy way out, thinking that everything will fall from the sky. Something very few have because the vast majority of us have to fight to achieve our successes. History tells us that the great feats and miracles of men and women were the product of the sacrifices and superhuman efforts of those who designed and shaped the world today.
For our purposes and our happiness, we must put an ounce of effort into our goals. The product of our sacrifices is within us. Until next time. God bless...
