There are just two major processor manufacturers to pick from - AMD and Intel. For a very long time Intel was dominating the market and everywhere were only their processors. It all changed when in 2017 AMD released their first Ryzen CPUs and from that point Intel started losing its ground.
The third generation of Ryzen processors based on the Zen 2 architecture, fabricated using a 7nm process is amazing and has proven to be a big competition for Intel. The amount of value they offer in comparison to Intel's 9th generation processors, called Coffee Lake Refresh that were launched in 2019 called, is fantastic. The biggest difference is the number of threads these processors have.
Just check it out:
- Ryzen 3 CPUs come with 8 threads, while Intel's i3 CPUs come with 4 threads.
- Ryzen 5 CPUs come with 12 threads, while Intel's i5 CPUs come with 6 threads.
- Ryzen 7 CPUs come with 16 threads, while Intel's i7 CPUs come with 8 threads.
Intel did step up their game with their 10th-generation processors called Comet Lake, but it's just another iteration of the old 14nm Skylake architecture. On the other hand, AMD has introduced its forth generation of Ryzen processors.
It's seriously a never ending battle between these two companies, but I think AMD has great years ahead and it's just a matter of time till they will be as big as Intel. AMD right now has a market capitalization of 100 billion dollars - Intel has more than double of that.
