Who was Kwame Nkrumah? (1909 - 1972)
The leader in Ghana's movement for independence from Britain, Kwame Nkrumah became the new nation's first prime minister and later president. Nkrumah was educated in the United States and England, where he aided in organizing the Pan-African Congress in 1957, helped form the Organization of African Unity in 1963, and continually sought growth opportunities for his country. He led Ghana until 1966, when he was overthrown by a military coup.

In standing for his country, Kwame Nkrumah stated, "We prefer self-government with danger to servitude in tranquillity." After Ghana gained independence, others began seeking liberty, too. By the mid -1960s, over 30 African countries had become sovereign. Nkrumah always challenged Ghanians to utilize their resources and talents to better the nation.

WHAT IS LOYALTY?
Kwame Nkrumah encouraged Ghanaians to courageously envision the best for their nation and work to fulfill that vision. Are you loyal to your country? What do you dream of for your country? How can you think that dream can be realized? Are there ways you can make it come true?
