"From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life." ARTHUR ASHE (1943 - 1993)

Arthur Ashe made history when he became a black tennis champion during a time when whites dominated the sport. As an amateur in 1968, he won the U.S. Open - the first African American to do so. Ashe also won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and founded the Association of Tennis Professionals. In 1983 his life changed forever when he was transfused with blood contaminated with HIV during heart surgery. In response, he formed his own AIDS foundation and devoted the rest of his life to raising awareness about the disease.

Never hesitant to get involved, Arthur Ashe created inner city tennis programs for youth and passionately protested against apartheid in South Africa - even successfully lobbying for a visa so he could visit and play tennis there. He became a recognizable face to the AIDS epidemic and tirelessly worked to assist other victims of the disease.

Arthur once said, "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can."
