Before I built and flew my first mini quad, I had higher aspirations, namely I wanted to be in the air myself, not virtually fiddling with it.
I flew hang gliders for about 3 years and was trained at a small airfield an hour south of Chicago, IL. Flying there consisted of being towed to elevation by a small ultra-light powered aircraft. There were obviously many risks, but biffing the landing wasn't usually one of them. The flat corn and soybean fields that surrounded the airfield were perfect places to ditch if you needed to.
Then I moved to California. The flight in the video was my first attempt at Hang Gliding in Cali; a whole different ballgame!
The launch was super smooth and I enjoyed a 45 minute flight along this particular ridge. The landing however, was a complete mess. What did I do wrong? 1st, I shouldn't have been flying that particular glider. She was too fast and slippery for my novice skills. 2nd, I needed to attack that landing strip. I needed to punch through the chop at ground level and instead I slowly waffled about until it was too late.
I walked away from this one and since traded in my glider for a mini quad... the footage is better and its quite a bit safer too!
