The concept itself is toxic and sexist and points back to a time when women were helpless and jobless and needed a man to 'save' them. It's obvious that this ideology is sexist in nature because no one ever says it to women. It's a very old school trope: man needs to make all the money so they can support the wife, 2.5 kids, and mortgage payments on the white-picket fence.
