NZ Mount Ngauruhoe or Mordor

Definitely one of the highlights on the NZ tour was the Tongariro National Park with Mount Ngauruhoe, better known as Mordor from Lord of the Rings. So the place where "the one ring" was forged and finally destroyed. Well, I'm Bavarian and I'm not unfamiliar with the Alps. And of course I know what alpine tours are. But as it is, I'm too proud to interpret the signs correctly. The locals' warnings that a typhoon is upcoming, of course, heeded. However, there were other tourists at the beginning of this 19 km hike, which we were certainly far superior to. Equipment? Bah, not even worth thinking about. So let's go. Allerdings standen da am Anfang dieser 19 km Wanderung auch andere Touris, denen wir sicherlich weit überlegen waren. Ausrüstung? Pah, noch nicht mal ein Gedanke wert. Also auf gehts.

Another sign like that. But next to it a school class. That's OK.	Schon wieder so ein Schild. Aber daneben eine Schulklasse. Geht schon.

OK, it's getting a bit uncomfortable and cold!	OK, so langsam wirds etwas ungemütlich und kalt!

The temperatures at that time were about 7 to 8 degrees. At the start it was probably about 20 degrees. There was also a light breeze and some rain. We have now asked ourselves whether our equipment is really appropriate. Unfortunately, the point of no return had already been passed. So put on all the equipment we had with us and go on.	Die Temperaturen waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt ca 7 bis 8 Grad. Am Start waren es wohl ca. 20 Grad. Dazu kam noch ein leichter Wind auf und etwas Regen. Wir haben uns jetzt die Frage gestellt, ob unsere Ausrüstung wirklich angemessen ist. Aber der Point of no return war leider schon überschritten. Also alles an Ausrüstung was wir dabei hatten angezogen und weiter gehts.

Plattau reached. Temperature felt -10 degrees (probably plus 2 in reality), freezing rain, strong wind but this is where the battle for Mordor must have taken place. Everything points to it. A huge plateau so the crater and on the side you could see the last peak behind the fog.	Plattau erreicht. Temperatur gefühlte -10 Grad (real wahrscheinlich Plus 2), Eisregen, starker Wind aber hier muss die Schlacht um Mordor stattgefunden haben. Alles deutet darauf hin. Ein riesiges Plateau also der Krater und an der Seite konnte man hinter dem Nebel den letzten Gipfel erkennen.

The view was breathtaking! The descent went down the other side of the mountain. Meter by meter it got warmer and we were slowly able to get used to normal temperatures again. The last kilometers went through a forest. Only then did we realize how much rain had fallen on the mountain. Most of the paths were not accessible due to the flowing water and were a bit scary.	Der Ausblick war Atemberaubend! Der Abstieg ging auf der anderen Seite des Berges runter. Höhenmeter für Höhenmeter wurde es wärmer und wir konnten uns so langsam wieder an normale Temperaturen gewöhnen. Die letzten Kilometer gingen durch ein Waldstück. Jetzt merkten wir erst, wieviel Regen am Berg gefallen ist. Der Großteil der Wege war von durch strömendes Wasser nicht begehbar und machte etwas Angst.

But in the end we arrived happily at the bottom.	Aber letztendlich sind wir glücklich unten angekommen.
