I need thicker stickers.
And no, that's not what she said, that is the reality of drying out my floorboards.
I got my hands on some scrap wood, but its uneven. I need a table saw to even the stickers.
It looks so easy in the picture above.
But if my stickers are uneven, then won't the wood dry into uneven warps?
I don't have landscape timbers to start. But I can use some two buy two scrap, since I am drying indoors.
I got 10 cement blocks yesterday.
Today I need to get a table saw, and when I went to the internet this is what I saw:
Flimsy garbage for hundreds of dollars, tiny hand held models to cut tiny hand held bits of wood.
I need something more robust than this. But everywhere I look, wood workers around here have.... hand made wooden table saw tables.
I suppose they make the second table saw with the first one, but how the heck and I supposed to build my own table saw without a table saw???? Ridiculous!
So I went to a local furniture making shop. It was the one next door to a guy I know, its a big open area divided into smaller woodworking areas by plastic meshing. I suppose they are all sub leasing their spaces.
The first interesting thing I saw was a nice wide 5 foot lathe bed! This is a tool I had already been looking for! I started taking pictures.
When the guy from that space came over, probably wondered at what I was taking pictures, I asked him about the lathe. What a nice lathe, I said. Its got such a wide bed!
Oh yeah, he told me, it opens up to a meter and a half.
Wow, I said. That's fantastic! I want to make shovel handles with cabo de hacha tree, you think I could try it out?
Have you spun before? He asked me, perhaps allowing a bit of surprise to be detected.
Not for a while, I said, since I was a little boy with my father. But if you showed me how, I'm sure I would pick it up quick.
We talked about wood and about humidity, we talked about timbers and lumbers. We talked about trees and species, we talked about tools and their prices.
This is the guy that makes his own table saws.
He took me to another space, apparently also his, where he had a younger man cutting boards on an inclined table saw, built by him, he said.
He took me to his favorite saw, which was not for sale, and opened it up to show me under the hood. It also had a drill head on the opposite face, two tools with one pulley.
What's this? I asked? I don't need this.
Its for 'boxing', he told me, using a word I was familiar with but had no idea of its meaning in this context. He pointed to some table leg joints near him and attempted to explain.
They come with that, he said.
He agreed to build me one, apparently from some furniture makers kit, and I will return later in the week to report any more progress on this front. Any time I want to spin, he said, come over and use the lathe.
I'm really excited about filling the need of a table saw....
Now on to find some latex paint.
