Filipinos are good in pairing food. We usually partner one dish with another. This makes an explosion of flavors when they are eaten together. One of this perfect pairing is puto(steemed rice cake) & dinuguan (pork blood stew)
Puto & Dinuguan is usually eaten together for merienda and sometimes is even offered as an attraction menu by big restaurants in the Philippines. The Puto or steemed rice cake is a local delicacy in all the regions of the country because basically ours is a rice eating people and since there are lots of rice fields in the country, most recipes are always traditionally rice based. Puto comes in many shapes ,colors & sizes but usually it is either in white or in yellow with salted egg or cheese on top.
Some Rice Cakes or Puto are being sold on the streets by vendors carrying them in their bikes. Price range from 10 to 20 pesos per piece. It is also sprinkled with shredded coconuts on top
Dinuguan on the other hand is prepared by mixing pork cut in small pieces, pork blood, vinegar, salt, pepper & spices. This can be a separate meal paired with rice but is really best paired with puto. The color is black and the sauce can either be thick or not. Sometimes you might be lucky to find a local canteen selling dinuguan for lunch or dinner for about 60 pesos per small serving in a bowl garnished with chili on top
