The Walls of Jericho: Walking in Faith Through Obedience
(Joshua 6:1–20)
The story of the walls of Jericho is a remarkable example of walking in faith through obedience to God’s instructions.
As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, they faced a formidable obstacle—the heavily fortified city of Jericho. Its walls were impenetrable, and defeating the city seemed impossible by human standards. However, God gave Joshua specific instructions that required the Israelites to trust Him completely:
"March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets." (Joshua 6:3–4)
Though the plan may have seemed unusual, Joshua and the Israelites obeyed faithfully. For six days, they silently marched around the city as instructed. On the seventh day, they marched seven times. At Joshua’s command, the priests blew their trumpets, and the people shouted loudly.
Miraculously, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites were able to take the city. Their obedience and trust in God’s plan brought about a victory that could not have been achieved through human effort alone.
The story of Jericho teaches us that walking in faith means trusting God’s plans, even when they seem unconventional or beyond understanding. It reminds us that God’s power is limitless and capable of breaking down any barrier we face, no matter how insurmountable it may appear. The Israelites’ victory came not through their strength but through their obedience to God’s Word, showing that faith is demonstrated through action and trust. This story also emphasizes the importance of patience and unity, as the people worked together to follow God’s instructions without questioning the process. Ultimately, it encourages us to remain steadfast in faith, knowing that God’s plans always lead to victory and that no obstacle is too great for Him to overcome. and trust in His perfect timing.
