Hello everyone, I hope y’all had a great day today? I was scrolling through twitter feed and i saw a video where a girl was bullied and after receiving more than 80 slaps in the video she did not try to even fight back. I’d like to share the power of embracing oneself and standing up for yourself in all aspects of life.
Standing up for onces self means means looking out for your own wellbeing and bettering yourself. I had the same experience a few years ago, some time ago when I was still in university, There was someone in my compound who was way older than me and I noticed how she always tried bull me in most situations concerning the compound. She did this to the extent that I got frustrated and I felt taken advantage of. Instead of remaining silent, I gathered courage and stood up for myself. I stood up for myself without been rude to her in anyway.
On this faithful day, it was my turn to clean the compound , and she came to where I was cleaning as usual to complain about me not cleaning it well. Mind you, there have been situations where I had to call the neighbors and the owner of the house to come help me check if I didn’t really clean the compound well, and their response was that it is well cleaned. I understand that we as humans do things differently and we also know how to do things in different ways. This woman I’m saying was never satisfied with anything I do in the compound and it was obvious to people around that everything she is doing is coming from a place of hate.
So on this particular day, I asked her in a respectful way that why does she like to do what she always do when it comes to me? Can y’all believe this woman hissed and that was when it got to me that I don’t have to always remain silent. I gathered courage and spoke up. I expressed my concerns on her attitude towards me. this was wasn’t easy but it sure made a difference that she apologized and I felt good for standing up for myself.
Imagine if I had just stayed silent she is going to continue doing what she does to me and I’ll always feel bad about it.I made her understand boundaries and I made her understand that there are better ways of communicating with people. Creating early boundaries is always very important and summons the courage to speak up before it gets out of hands, i know if had remained silent this woman's confidence would have grown and it might also lead to me receiving a slap.
Not to forget my people, standing up for yourself is not about being confrontational but it is about being self aware and valuing your worth. We have to learn to set boundaries and not silencing our self everytime. We have to learn to speak up everytime and express our needs as humans. Stand up for yourself, embrace your inner strength, and wait to see how things will turn out with your confidence.
Thanks for your time.
