Schizophyllum commune or the gill fungus is a species of fungus in the genus Schizophyllum . It resembles a dense coral reef fan. It has serrations that vary in shape from creamy yellow to pale white. The cap is small, 1–4 centimetres (3⁄8–1+5⁄8 in) wide with a dense but spongy body texture.
It is known as the split gill fungus due to the unique characteristic of the "gills" splitting lengthwise on the underside of the cap. This fungus is found worldwide.
It is found in the wild on decaying trees after the rainy season followed by the dry season where the fungus is collected naturally.
