Hey everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you're all doing great. Today I want to talk about a very interesting movie that I'm sure many of you have already seen: The Theory of Everything. I watched it again, more calmly and with a more analytical eye, with a mix of curiosity and, I'll be honest, a little bit of fear. Was I about to sit through a two-hour physics class? Or the typical tearjerker drama designed to force you to cry? Well, I'm happy to report it was neither, or at least, not how I imagined it. The first thing you need to understand—and for me, this is key—is that this isn't really a movie about Stephen Hawking. I mean, yes, obviously it is, but that's not the center, not the heart of the story. At its core, it's a love story, a couple's drama, with all its layers and complexity. The movie is based on the memoir of Jane Wilde, his first wife, and that point of view, my friends, is everything! That's why we don't see the genius on an unreachable pedestal. We see a man, a woman, and the universe they build together, which then, little by little, threatens to collapse. This approach is what saves it from being a documentary with actors. It makes them flesh and blood, imperfect, relatable, and because of that, you can really connect with them. The film puts you right in their living room, in their arguments, their joys, and in that silent desperation that sometimes hurts the most. Of course, I can't go on without talking about what, for me, holds the entire film together: the performances. Let's start with Eddie Redmayne. Look, I've seen many transformations in cinema, but this guy's... it's from another planet. It's insane, impressive. It's not just the physical deterioration, which in itself is mind-blowing how he achieves it, but from the very first minute, when he's a brilliant but slightly awkward Cambridge student, you already believe him; he is Stephen Hawking. There's a scene at the beginning, before any sign of the disease, where his way of moving, smiling, looking… he's already won you over. And as ALS progresses, the transformation is so, so total that it leaves you breathless. It's not an imitation; the guy becomes him. He gave his heart and soul to this role and, believe me, it shows in every second. There are moments when he can only act with his eyes or a slight smile, and he conveys absolutely everything. Without a doubt, a role that deserved every single award it received. You get to a point where you completely forget you're watching an actor. >Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén super bien, hoy quiero hablarles de una película muy interesante, que seguro muchos de ustedes ya habrán visto, se trata de La teoría del todo.. la ví de nuevo, con más calma y mirada más analítica, con una mezcla de curiosidad y, les soy sincero, un poquito de miedo.. me iba a clavar una clase de física de dos horas? ¿O el típico drama corta venas diseñado para hacerte llorar a la fuerza? Pues me alegra decirles que no fue ni lo uno ni lo otro, o al menos, no como yo me lo imaginaba.. lo primero que tienen que entender, y para mí esto es clave, es que esta no es realmente una película sobre Stephen Hawking. O sea, sí, obvio que sí, pero ese no es el centro, no es el corazón de la historia.. en el fondo, es una historia de amor, un drama de pareja, con todas sus capas y su complejidad.. la película está basada en las memorias de Jane Wilde, su primera esposa, y ese punto de vista, amigos, ¡lo es todo!
Por eso no vemos al genio en un pedestal, inalcanzable.. vemos a un hombre, a una mujer, y el universo que ellos construyen juntos y que después, poco a poco, amenaza con derrumbarse, este enfoque es lo que la salva de ser un documental con actores. Los hace de carne y hueso, imperfectos, cercanos y, por eso mismo, te puedes identificar un montón con ellos, la película te mete de lleno en la sala de su casa, en sus discusiones, en sus alegrías y en esa desesperación silenciosa que a veces duele más.. claro, no puedo seguir sin hablar de lo que, para mí, sostiene toda la película: las actuaciones. Empecemos por Eddie Redmayne, miren, he visto muchas transformaciones en el cine, pero lo de este tipo... es de otro planeta. Es una cosa de locos, impresionante.. no es solo el deterioro físico, que ya de por sí es alucinante cómo lo logra, sino que desde el primer minuto, cuando es un estudiante de Cambridge todo brillante pero medio torpe, ya te lo crees, ya es Stephen Hawking..
Hay una escena al principio, antes de cualquier señal de la enfermedad, en la que su forma de moverse, de sonreír, de mirar… ya te compró. Y a medida que la ELA avanza, la transformación es tan, pero tan total que te deja sin aliento, no es una imitación; el tipo se convierte en él.. se entregó en cuerpo y alma a este papel y, créanme, se nota en cada segundo. What a woman, what an amazing actress, seriously! Her role is just as key and, for me, on the same level. Brutal! It would have been so easy for her character to just be "the wife who puts up with everything," you know? But no, not at all. The film gives her character an arc that, wow, is incredibly powerful. We see her go from this super-in-love university girl to being... as they say in the movie itself, the saint, the martyr, the sacrifice. Basically, she's the pillar holding up Stephen's entire world. And the movie makes it crystal clear: without her, many of Hawking's achievements simply wouldn't have happened. Felicity Jones… wow, she's incredible. She shows you that mix of strength, fragility, love, and a weariness, an exhaustion that you can truly, almost feel in your own skin. The chemistry she has with Redmayne is on another level. You genuinely believe their love, their glances, their inside jokes, and then, when things get tough, you also believe the distance that grows between them. It's a tremendous performance that touches your heart and, in the end, is the soul of the entire film. And wait, all of this is wrapped in a production that is just beautiful. I mean, visually, the film is a little gem. The director, James Marsh—who, in case you don't know him, also directed the documentary Man on Wire, which is insanely good, watch it!—this guy really knows how to tell a story with the camera. The cinematography is incredible. At times it has that grainy look, you know, like old family home videos, and then suddenly, boom! it hits you with super-sharp shots, with vivid colors that make Cambridge look spectacular. And there's a detail that, personally, blew my mind: how they use imagery to explain Hawking's theories. They're constantly inserting subtle things... suddenly, the cream swirling in a coffee cup looks like a galaxy, or the spin of a wheel resembles a black hole… It's those brilliant little details that put you inside his head without anyone needing to explain everything with dialogue. Add to all this the music by Jóhann Jóhannsson. Wow, the soundtrack! It's one of those that's very noticeable, very present, but it's so emotional, it hits you right in the heart. Maybe for some it's like, "tone it down a notch!," but for me, it fits perfectly. It makes the most important scenes feel even more powerful. >Pero ojo, que una actuación de este calibre no brilla sola, y ahí, ¡pum!, entra Felicity Jones haciendo de Jane.. qué mujer, qué actrizaza, de verdad! Su papel es igual de clave y, para mí, está al mismo nivel, ¡brutal! Es que era muy fácil que su personaje se quedara solo en “la esposa que aguanta todo”, ¿saben? Pero no, para nada.. la película le da un viaje a su personaje que, ¡uf!, es potentísimo, la vemos pasar de ser esta chica universitaria, súper enamorada, a ser… como dicen en la misma peli, la santa, la mártir, el sacrificio.. básicamente, ella es el pilar que sostiene todo el mundo de Stephen. Y la peli te lo deja clarísimo: sin ella, muchos de los logros de Hawking, simplemente, no hubieran pasado.. Felicity Jones… ¡uf!, lo hace increíble, te muestra esa mezcla de fuerza, de fragilidad, de amor y de un cansancio, un agotamiento que de verdad, casi lo puedes sentir en la piel.. la química que tiene con Redmayne es de otro nivel, de verdad te crees su amor, te crees sus miradas, sus chistes internos, y luego, cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles, también te crees esa distancia que va creciendo entre ellos.
Es un trabajo tremendo, que te llega al corazón y que, al final, es el alma de toda la película.. y espérense, que todo esto viene envuelto en una producción que es una belleza. O sea, visualmente, la película es una joyita.. el director, James Marsh –que por si no lo ubican, es el mismo que hizo el documental Man on Wire, que es una locura de bueno, ¡véanlo!–, este tipo sabe cómo narrar con la cámara, de verdad.. la fotografía es increíble.. a ratos tiene ese look como con granito, ¿saben?, como si fueran videos viejos de familia, y de repente, ¡pum!, te mete unos planos súper nítidos, con unos colores vivos que hacen que Cambridge se vea espectacular.
Y hay un detalle que a mí, personalmente, me voló la cabeza: cómo usan las imágenes para explicar las teorías de Hawking, todo el tiempo te meten cosas súper sutiles.. de repente, la crema que le echan al café forma una espiral y parece una galaxia, o el giro de una rueda se ve como un agujero negro… Son esos detallitos geniales que te meten en su cabeza sin que nadie te tenga que estar explicando todo con diálogos.. a todo esto súmenle la música de Jóhann Jóhannsson. ¡Uf, la banda sonora! They drop lines like, "there should be no boundaries to human endeavor," or "where there is life, there is hope," and bam, they stick with you. It's impossible not to feel something, right? With that ability to defy everything, to break all expectations. You leave with a strange, bittersweet taste in your mouth, but with an admiration for human grit that's overwhelming. But... is it a perfect film? For me, not even close. This is where I get conflicted, you know? Because for all the good things I've already mentioned, the movie has a recurring problem: it plays it way too safe. It is, seriously, the textbook example of how to make a movie to win awards, what Americans call "Oscar bait." I mean, it has the complete recipe: a tear-jerking true story, an unbelievable physical transformation, a perfect production... but it takes no risks, it lacks that spark, that boldness. Stephen Hawking was a guy who changed the game, who broke all the rules... it's super ironic that the movie about his life is so... conventional in its storytelling. Yes, it's well-made, it's proper, but it doesn't feel half as revolutionary. This is very noticeable in the last part of the film; there's a point where, for me, the script kind of deflates. I'm talking about how they handle the couple's separation and Jane's new relationship. Everything feels super rushed, like they just skim over it and that's it. After showing us all that incredible love and struggle they had together, suddenly the estrangement feels so abrupt, you know? It's jarring. And you ask yourself, well, what happened? Why did they start drifting apart? Did they never argue? I feel like scenes were missing that would have shown that tension for real, in a rawer, more honest way. I get the feeling they didn't want to "tarnish" Stephen Hawking's image, as if to avoid showing him in a not-so-heroic light, and they took an easier path, with less trouble. And it's a shame, because real life is complicated, it's messy, and I think the film would have been much more powerful if it had dared to dive into those problems without fear. >Y a ver, el mensaje de la película, obvio, es de esos que te inspiran un montón.. te sueltan frases como esa de que “no debería haber límites para lo que podemos hacer” o la de “mientras hay vida, hay esperanza”, y ¡puf!, se te quedan grabadas, es que es imposible no sentir algo, ¿no?, con esa capacidad para mandarlo todo a volar, para romper todas las expectativas. Sales con un sabor de boca medio raro, como agridulce, pero con una admiración que no te cabe en el pecho por la garra del ser humano.. pero... ¿es una película perfecta? Para mí, ni de broma.. aquí es donde entro yo en conflicto, ¿saben? Porque con todo lo bueno que ya les dije, la peli tiene un problema que se repite y se repite: va demasiado a lo seguro.. es, en serio, el manual de cómo hacer una película para ganar premios, lo que los gringos llaman “Oscar bait”.
O sea, tiene la receta completa: historia real que te hace llorar, una transformación física de no creer, una producción perfecta... pero no se arriesga, le falta esa chispa, ese atrevimiento, Stephen Hawking fue un tipo que cambió las reglas del juego, que rompió con todo.. es súper irónico que la película sobre su vida sea tan… normalita en cómo te la cuenta. Sí, está bien hecha, es correcta, pero no se siente ni la mitad de revolucionaria.. esto se nota muchísimo en la última parte de la peli, hay un punto en que, para mí, el guion como que se desinfla. Me refiero a cómo manejan la separación de la pareja y la nueva relación de Jane.. todo se siente súper apurado, como que te lo cuentan por encimita y ya, después de que te muestran todo ese amor y esa lucha increíble que tuvieron juntos, de repente el distanciamiento se siente súper de golpe, ¿saben? Te choca.
Y te preguntas, bueno, ¿qué pasó? ¿Por qué se empezaron a alejar? ¿Nunca discutieron? Siento que faltaron escenas que te mostraran esa tensión de verdad, de una forma más cruda, más honesta.. me da la sensación de que no quisieron “ensuciar” la imagen de Stephen Hawking, como para no mostrarlo de una forma que no fuera tan heroica, y se fueron por un caminito más fácil, sin tanto problema. Look, if I have to give it a score, for me it's a well-earned 7.5/10. Seriously, what Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones do is out of this world; it's so, so good that they alone lift the film above its flaws. The visuals, the music, the cinematography… all of that is a 10/10 and makes watching it a very enjoyable experience. It's one of those movies that moves something inside you and inspires you, there's no doubt about that. Now, for the "but"... and it's a "but" that frustrates me. I have this lingering feeling that if the script had been a bit more daring, less formulaic, if it had dared to break the mold, this film could have been a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. So, do I recommend it? Of course, absolutely! You have to see it, if only to witness two performances that are easily among the best of that decade. It's a story of love, grit, and hope that, even if it feels a bit too "clean" at times, manages to connect on a very human level. Well, that's it for today's review, take care everyone! Miren, si le tengo que poner una calificación, para mí es un 7.5/10, bien ganado.. es que, de verdad, lo que hacen Eddie Redmayne y Felicity Jones es de otro planeta, es tan, tan bueno, que ellos solitos levantan la película por encima de sus fallas.. la parte visual, la música, la foto… todo eso es un 10 de 10 y hace que verla sea una experiencia que se disfruta un montón, es de esas pelis que te mueven algo por dentro y te inspiran, de eso no hay duda.. ahora, el “pero”... y es un pero que me da coraje.
Me queda esa espinita clavada de que si el guion hubiera sido un poquito más arriesgado, menos formuláico, si se hubiera atrevido a salirse del molde, esta película pudo ser una obra maestra con todas sus letras. Al final, ¿se las recomiendo? ¡Claro que sí, de todas maneras! Tienen que verla, aunque sea nomás para presenciar dos actuaciones que son, fácil, de lo mejor que se hizo en esa década. Es una historia de amor, de garra y de esperanza que, aunque a veces se sienta demasiado “limpiecita”, logra conectar a un nivel súper humano.. bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho!
