A few days ago, the Splinterlands team revealed the new set of cards for the Voucher Shop that arrived in-game on 30 de septiembre. With this update, two very interesting new skills landed that could shift the strategy for several units or even shake up the meta. I'd like to dive into the impact this could have on gameplay by analyzing the first one: the Focus ability, introduced through the Bakko Vharos card. It is worth mentioning that later on, in another post, I will dedicate an individual analysis to all the other cards in this release to break down their stats and strategic possibilities.
Focus
- Focus: +1 Ranged Power to all allied units.
The arrival of Focus: The Inspire of ranged combat | La llegada de Focus: El Inspire de la distancia
The Focus ability comes with a straightforward description that carries immense tactical weight: it grants +1 Ranged Power to all allied units on the battlefield. At first glance, it is impossible not to make the immediate connection with Inspire, the iconic ability that provides extra melee damage to the entire team. Focus arrives as the equivalent version designed to boost ranged attacks, filling a historical gap in range-focused offensive compositions.
For a long time, decks centered around ranged damage relied almost entirely on specific summoners or individual positioning to scale their output. With the arrival of Bakko Vharos and the integration of Focus, players now have a passive source within monster lineups to massively buff all ranged units. This represents a substantial improvement for teams built around this damage type, allowing damage per round to scale drastically and put immense pressure on enemy positions with a devastating barrage.
Synergies and the impact against Forcefield | Sinergias y el impacto contra Forcefield
The main appeal of Focus lies in its ability to multiply the numeric value of full lineups. When combined with low-mana-cost monsters featuring fast ranged attacks, adding +1 damage per unit builds up a considerable amount of total damage per round. This enables units that previously dealt moderate damage to become real threats capable of breaking armor and shredding rival tanks' health bars in just a few turns.
However, as with any offensive mechanic in Splinterlands, the boost in attack power carries a tactical risk that must be carefully weighed: the adverse interaction with Forcefield. The Forcefield ability reduces all incoming damage equal to or greater than 5 points down to just 1 point. By boosting the ranged damage of units that already possess high stats (for example, raising an attack from 4 to 5), Focus can inadvertently neutralize an attacker's effectiveness against tanks equipped with this passive defense.
Despite this specific drawback, the fact that Focus is currently only present on a single card like Bakko Vharos makes managing this scenario highly controllable. Since it is currently the sole option in the catalog, it is easy to anticipate when it is convenient to deploy it and when it is better to skip it in favor of other alternatives that better fit the rival team or match constraints.
Dominance in restrictive Rulesets: Going the Distance | Dominio en Rulesets restrictivos: Going the Distance
Where the Focus ability promises to truly shine is in specific ruleset scenarios, the most obvious case being Going the Distance, where only ranged monsters can be fielded. Under this battle condition, Focus goes from being an interesting option to an absolute top priority.
In Going the Distance, your entire lineup benefits from the +1 Ranged Power buff, making the absolute most out of the global ability effect. Furthermore, countermeasures in this context are extremely limited: there are very few cards in the game with Forcefield that also feature ranged attacks to be allowed under this rule, with Prismologist being the only notable example so far. This minimizes the risk of seeing damage blocked, ensuring that the power boost from Focus converts into pure offensive advantage over your opponent. Still, it won't be the only ability to watch out for, as mechanics like Return Fire can reflect part of the damage back without a maximum cap, meaning Focus will increase the reflected blow—though since that can happen with or without Focus, it remains something to anticipate.
Conclusion
The arrival of Focus through Bakko Vharos marks a positive milestone for tactical diversity in Splinterlands. By offering a ranged equivalent to Inspire, the Voucher Shop delivers a valuable resource to empower ranged lineups and dominate rulesets like Going the Distance. Reading the enemy lineup properly to avoid surprises against Forcefield will be key to unlocking the full competitive potential of this new ability.
