Bats leaving Deer Cave in Gunung Mulu National Park, Sarawak Province, Malaysian Borneo. Photo taken by me (Bradford Duplisea), October 2004. As dusk descends, millions of bats pour out of Deer Cave, beginning their daily foraging commute--to as far as the coast, over fifty miles away. It is indeed more spectacular than any natural event I have ever witnessed. I watched for over two hours as a dense, black line of bats snaked its way across the horizon.
